starter grinding

   Hi guys just a quick question, after going 16v I've noticed my previously good starter has started an awful grinding noise when you turn the engine over. I'm thinking the starter has had it but it was always fine when I was 8v so was just wondering are there any differences in flywheels between the 16v mk1 Engine and the 8v causing the teeth on the old valeo starter I have not to mesh properly?
   Im hoping it is the starter bearings being shagged and not the flywheel ring gear

   Don't think there is a difference,it could be that the flywheel itself is worn.
