Help! starter motor problems!

    Went to start the car this morning, starter motor worked fine, now it's not, I just get fast clicking sounds now, I've had the starter motor off, tried another one, and bench tested both, both spin fast, checked all earths, and lives to the starter and battery.

    I just tried jumper cables on the starter to ensure a good ground and live, straight to the battery, still just get clicking, but with the starter removed and bench tested it will spin fast,

    Do you think it could be the ignition switch at fault then?

    edit: just did a bench test with it still on the car, lived and earthed with jumper cables straight to a battery, then bridged the solenoid, made the same sound when tried with the key.

    I think you have an exhausted battery,charge it up overnight.double check all of the connections to starter,it's not uncommon for connectors to become corroded.

    I have a reading of 12.65 volts on the battery, had another go at bridging the connections, listened carefully, I can hear the pinion like it's hitting the flywheel but not actually spinning it.

    ok so I've just used a fully charged battery not on the car, with jumper cables to the live on the starter and grounded it, then bridged the live to the ignition switch wiring on the starter, still same thing happens? really confused now.

    Right what's the starter cog teeth like?if the solenoid is pushing the cog out and the teeth are in good condition,then the flywheel would be my next port of call.

    Cog looked fine, it's too dark to take it off again, but I've done a few more tests with my multimeter, I lose about 1 volt while cranking, also tested volts on the starter live, and I'm not even reading more than one volt, think I'm just going to re do all the wiring and go from there

    Sounds like you have a bad earth
