CV Joint clip - still knocking?

  1. #1
    Evening all

I've had this knocking noise in my car which has been going on for years which I presumed was a CV joint clip or something. Took into the garage for MOT and they said that the CV joint clip OS is a failure, so they fixed it. They replaced the OSF outer CV boot clip but the car is still knocking. Should that be the case? Or is the cause of the knocking something else ?

    Cheers.

Sounds like over time the cv joint has lost it's grease, this will wear the joint out.so fitting a new boot and clip will do nothing.only way round it is a near driveshaft.

Could be a knackered CV joint in which case new driveshaft is needed. It could also be a number of other things like wishbones, anti roll bar, drop links etc so it's probably worth checking the whole front end over

i had the same issue, i bought two new driveshafts and now theres no more knocking nose, cost me about £110 ish

Same there. Just one Hard knock from front wheel then full lock turn and not moving. Sometimes, not all time. Driveshaft was changed.

My car makes a rapid clicking noise but only when I go round corners. Is this due to worn CV joints and would a squirt of grease fix it or will I definitely need new drive shafts?

Always the drive shaft if it knocks when you turn a certain angle. Not the most reliable of things.. the new drive shafts you buy now have an abs ring and they are fecking poop as well. Pointless on a vtr.

Missing clip means that the grease is gone and the damage is done.
It wont get better and you can't fix it, my advice is to buy a new.
Ones the knocking sound is in each turn it wont take long before it goes, and you don't want to experience that at 60

Can do both shafts for under £60 so it's worth doing.

If it's not too bad, sometimes re-packing the boot with thick CV grease can quieten it down.

OK Martin. What grease is best? There are lots of different types available. The car is 18 yrs old but only has 52,000 on the clock so I think it's worth my while to repack the boot but doubtful if buying two new drive shafts is worth the money, so how thick a grease can I get?

You can get a new drive shaft from J&R on ebay for about 30 quid. doesn't really break the bank, its all good packing grease into it but if its already making noise its knackered and you will end up replacing the shaft in the end and you have to think how safe is it really? especially if it failed at speed.

It's called CV Joint grease, it's really thick black stuff normally.

tbh, this really, if it's got 52,000 on it, you'd be as well to change the shaft. even just one.

Mine had it's first shaft changed at 82,000 miles, and the passenger one was the OEM one until 140,000 ish because the boot got changed before it perished.

Thanks for the advice guys. I know you're right really. New shafts would extend the car's safe and useful life. It's the best option for my wife and me as we're nearly 80 yrs young and a replacement, much younger car would probably outlive us! But I'm safe on the road. I've still got my full set of marbles. I'll see what she says. Thanks again.

The drivers side knock has disappeared completely. When I grab my wheel I dont seem to get any play in it in any direction.
Any ideas what I might have done wrong or what else it could be?
    Thanks
The lower arm bolts that go through the floor, re-torque them. That's the most common cause.

Also, make sure the main wishbone bolt (18mm one) is fully torqued, if it's even a tiny bit less than tight it'll knock like a bugger!

Alternatively, if it's not the lower arms it could be the strut top mount bearings are worn and knocking.

If you have non drop link suspension (1.1, and 1.4i) then the anti roll bar can sometimes move and touch the lower arm, this can give you a knock.

Drop link style suspension, it could very well be a worn drop link.
