Inner driveshaft boot weird question

  1. #1
Mine has a nick in it where it joins the cv cup, noticed it today so I'll just pop a new shaft in - it's more cost effective to get a new one rather than spend an hour repairing with the inner boot kit etc but I did notice something odd on the one one which was how I noticed the problem in the first place. It appears to be an original oem Citroen shaft just very old obviously with a ton of miles on it. Now the weird thing through this hole in the boot leaks all I can describe as a thick "oil" not the usual dirty greenish or grey cv grease I would have expected The oil leaks out when stone cold too so not even any heat from the friction of driving, plus you don't need to squeeze the boot to get it to come out. it's not emulsified oil that's got water contamination it's just very black and viscous but doesn't smell as strong as gearbox oil or engine oil. What did they use to fill these with or rather what could some badgers been filling it with? Have never had a cv boot break and leak this kind of stuff it usually splatters grease all over rather than whatever's in this one. For the time being I cleaned up the hole as I best I could with the shaft rotated so the holes upwards facing then siliconed it up just so it wouldn't run dry until I replace the shaft, only so I can move the car about etc

Just a guess maybe oil mixed with the graphite grease from the cv joint, would account for the colour.

Never seen anything like it, there no where for oil to enter. Is it worth swapping the shaft or doing a cv boot swap using the inner boot kit from euros?

Why is it more cost effective? Driveshaft ~£75, boot kit ~£10? Or are you paying somebody labour to do it?

J&R driveshafts are £30 delivered to your door, the boot kit is about £10 but its not a simple slip over boot like you'd normally see its an odd design that requires a bit more work involving fully stripping the CV joint down. Still going to try it though first though if it saves me £15, will only cost me time I guess

Fully stripping the CV joint.. It's purely a case of getting the shaft in a vice, turn the CV to full lock, then hit the inner splined part of the CV. It will knock off with a bit of force! Then refit you just have to make sure the spring clip is properly in the groove and tap it back on.

yeah thats what I intend to do, be interesting to see what comes out of it

But I didn't realise you could get driveshafts for £30. Even VTS ones?

looked inside another spare shaft too - same thing. Surely this must be standard fit stuff from psa?

Yet all the kits to replace boots contain grease, never this oil

    It is grease lol

all the kits contain a thicker grease because it's cheap shit and doesn't lubricate the joints as well.

Have you ever wondered why OEM factory shafts last like, 80-100,000 miles? and aftermarket ones dont?

It's not craggy like a grease but anyway this kit is by GKN or somebody, I'm sure they are an oem supplier maybe not for Psa anymore but a bit like lemforder etc. most after market shafts are literally a quarter of the cost too, the materials must be of a questionable quality as they still make a profit on say a 40 quid shaft

AMK are the shafts that the dealers/motor factors use now because nobody makes NEW shafts, they're all re-manufactured. that's why they're so cheap.

Stay away from any SHITE that eurocarparts sell. The quality is questionable for their driveshafts. I've had 4 shafts from them an all of them have failed within 15-20,000 miles - cheap rubber boots splitting. My remanufactured shaft from AMK has been on the car for 50,000 miles! to put that into perspective and it was cheaper.

Such as JR shafts? Even remanufactured 30 quid is very cheap can't see how they make any money on them!
It's probably worth giving rubber boots a smear of silicone pipe grease or krytox to keep them supple even so often in my view

I bought two shafts from J&R in September 2014, one of the boots has already split!

Never had a problem on my standard height car anyway.

It's on a standard height VTR, so it's certainly not caused by excessive lowering. They do come with a warranty so I'll speak to them and see what they say. Perhaps I bought a dodgy one.

I have had two in a year also always the outer gaiter that gives up on mine. I think that the fairies are made of paper. Lol. And their warranty isn't worth a carrot! Want proof of this and that and was it fitted by a qualified mechanic and not diy. Full of hidden clauses that went told of when bought

Where did you purchase your Amk driveshaft from? As they only deal with motor factors
