Before i go any further i know you lot like to jump on the hate band wagon, so please bear in mind ITS A SAXO and not really worth spending any considerable amount of money on, so no silly suggestions "oh buy a full supersprint" because that's not going to happen
02 plate VTR, 4-1 manifold and 1.1 straight pipe, standard VTR backbox
first petrol car i've owned and driven, passed my test and had a dturbo so back pressure wasn't even an option as i had boost, consecutive DERVs after that
What i want to know.....
In a nutshell, with my current set up, am i better off getting a sport backbox (muffler) etc or putting a tip on a piece of straight pipe?
Backbox gains will be negligible unless the backpressure is completely wrong, the pipe will only effect the noise i should think; performance only stay the same or go downhill, thought id come to you guys for some help as the internet has many conflicting views.
Just cheaper to get a pipe fabricated with a £20 tip over a £100+ backbox which isn't going to do anything.
i know on a boosted car you dont want/need BP as the charger kicks it all out anyway.
i understand on a N/A petrol car, you don't want too much or too little, it's gotta be 'just right' but i don't quite know exactly what 'just right' is!
My query, as i've got the 1.1 centre pipe (which is meant to be 1/2" smaller than the standard vtr one even though it fits just fine), will it be okay with just a straight pipe? smaller pipe = higher velocity, the way im picturing the air flow in my head surely you just want it as free flowing as possible?
My backbox fell off a while back when i was away from home and i managed a motorway trip with it off, obviously there was hardly any power gain/loss, it felt faster but this was probably placebo as it just 'sounded' faster.
I can also imagine it would be just the same as having a leaky exhaust with regards to fuel efficiency and performance
I just want the science of it, physical gains/losses and hoping someone can shed some light.
Not worried about excessive noise (it sounded fucking rude spitting and burbling a good'un), or the plod, as long as you dont drive like a total c**t and respect the road rules and other road users it's generally not an issue.
Thanks guys
