Exhaust Repair Advice Please

  1. #1
    Hey,

I have a 1.0 Saxo First that has two holes in the exhaust. 1 in the back box and the other in the middle pipe which appears to have eroded a clip. I do have pictures but don't think I can upload them to this post.

I will potentially only have the car for up to 2 and a half months longer and really am looking for a cheaper repair option than replacing the exhaust. I have been advised exhaust repair tape and/or a metal sleeve, both of which I have seen in Halfords. I would be perfectly able to use these to repair the holes but just want to know tips on doing it and specifically which product/products I need to buy.

    Thanks in advance

try your local motor factors for prices on replacement parts first. my straight pipe (centre section) snapped at the bracket and was only £23 for a brand new pipe. very cheap.

either pay small sums for multiple repairs or pay the same amount for replacement parts once. plus its time saving and excellent for resale

I did get quotes on having them replaced as it's both the mid section and rear box. £105 was the absolute cheapest with fitting. I wouldn't mind having a cracking at doing it myself as the parts are pittance, but I don't trust working under a car that's jacked up and don't know anyone with some ramps or chocks

It is worth doing it yourself as its two clamps and two bolts at the manifold, but as you say safety first.

A garage might weld it for cheaper. The band things from halfords are shit and you'd still need to get under the car.

I had a look and can get mini ramps for the car. They come in sets of two so if I got two of them I suppose I could do it myself. Do I need axle stands as well if I'm using these ramps. The ones I was looking at where 1t limit each so well within weight limit.

If I brought replacement rear silencer and middle pipe do they tend to come with the clips as well?

I prefer axle stands over ramps but ea h to their own. You might get the U clamp for the centre, but you an always re-use them.

A replacement u camp and an olive clamp for the back box are really cheap and available from any motor factors.

If you're selling the car why bother to repair? If the exhaust is noisy you might consider the possibility that the baffles inside it are blown too.
