noise on long journeys.

   Im getting a intermittent knocking noise, sounds like its coming from near the gear stick or close to but only on long journeys say over 50 miles. Any ideas

   Any other ideas what it could be as wouldn't that mean it makes a noise all the time?

   Could be its getting warm just enough to allow the exhaust to knock (for example) once the car's up to temp / driven for a bit.
   
   It's a long shot, but putting the car up on axle stands and using a pry bar to find anything that knocks when wiggled should help pin it down.
