VTS Coil pack differences?

   I have had a stuttering problem with my mk1 16v vtr conversion where occasionally the revs would die when accelerating and pick up again a couple of seconds later. This problem is getting worse/more frequent. Also have a problem of occasionally running of 3 cylinders at idle.
   
   I suspected the coil pack and have had it off and tested with a multimeter, confirming coil pack is shot. I then tried a mk2 coil pack from a friend but the car wouldn't even start.
   
   Guessing there any differences between a mk1 and mk2 coil pack?
   
   Also anything else I should check that could be causing the problems?

   The stuttering occurs between 2500 and 3000 rpm if that makes any difference
