Loud Banging!

    Hi guys,
Just recently ive noticed that there was something wrong with the steering of my car, when i was turning the steering wheel would start centering then it would stick a little bit then sort of whip to centre.
It was abit of an odd sensation to explain so i let my brother drive my car as he would have more experience. When he was driving we took a left hand turn and there was a loud knock and the car seemed to jump abit.
When we carried on driving we took a sharp left hand turn and it did the same thing again but the car seemed to jump abit more with again a loud banging noise, Aswell when your driving in a straight line and go on and off the accelerator it seems to knock abit aswell.
When we pulled into the driveway it again, was knocking very loudly, and the car was jumping quite viciously.
Also when he was driving the car seemed to get jammed in third gear with the clutch depressed.
The car i think has either a 1.0 or a vts gearbox fitted to it but im not sure which, but there is quite a loud whine in 5th, third is also getting louder and it doesnt like to go into reverse and first gear sometimes.
Just wondering if anybody has any idea what the problem might be?
Im thinking either the diff or driveshafts?
Sorry for the big post just wanted to provide as much info as possible.
Also if there is any way of me telling what might be the problem before i start purchasing parts it would be greatly appreciated.
Again sorry for long post guys!

    Thanks
    Toby

Car is a 01 Saxo 1.6 Vtr btw

Yep i just jacked it up and when i rotate one wheel it rotates for a couple of turns sometimes, then it will hit off something and wont turn anymore, and when you rotate it back it will hit off something else in about quarter of a turn. This is with one wheel on the ground still.

Could anybody tell me where abouts to find the code of my gearbox? just to find out if its a 1.1 box or not?

    Thanks
