Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Lamp

    Hi

I'd be grateful for some advice as I'm very non-technical sadly !

I bought a Saxo Forte 1124cc, year 2000 (W reg) four months ago. It was previously a friend of my elderly mothers car who had given up driving. Car in excellent all round condition and only 31,000 on the clock.

I had a service and MOT done. No problems. Car running perfectly.

But I have just noticed that when turning the ignition on to the position before actual starting (when all the warning lights etc come on and then disappear after starting up), everything comes on (and then goes out) EXCEPT that the large Engine Coolant Temperature Warning Lamp display on left hand side of instrument panel does NOT come on at all.

Might this be just a fuse or more intricate such as a sensor?

Does the lamp have a two part operation so that even if it does not display on ignition, it would STILL illuminate as a warning if water temp got to a dangerous level.

    Thank you.

Can you post up an image of the instruments/clocks etc?It might be that the bulb behind has simply blown.

Yes i can do that !

Hopefully today but if not tomorrow.

    Thanks for the reply

My guess is the bulb has blown.bit of a phaff for replacing it,if you go into the interior/styling section look for a how to guide on removing the steering wheel.

    NO! lol

    That's a digital dash with LED's.

There is no need for a power on self test for an LED so the coolant temp light will not light up unless there is actually an overheating situation

so basically, you should never ever see it light up.

Older models with bulbs DO light up then go out.

Confused me when I first got my 1.5D back in 2009

    Ooh, this is interesting !!!

Thanks guys but I'm a tad confused as the handbook says that at the ignition position before actual starting, the coolant warning light should illuminate (just as the engine oil light on the right hand side of the panel does) and then go out once engine started.

    Am I missing something ?

    Yes

You have the wrong handbook, or the handbook is wrong. (for example in my handbook it shows no EML or ECU for my 1.5d despite it having an EML light and an ECU)

the coolant light on a digi dash will never light unless it's overheating or the sensor shorts to ground.
