rear axle bearings

   Its time for my rear axle to be sorted out. Im pretty skint at the moment but have found an axle with no play off a vtt pretty cheap but the milage is just below what mine is on now and dead. If I was to buy it and replace the bearings at my mates garage would this prevent the axle from playing up in the near future? Am I right in thinking that the play only happens once the bearing fails and the pin starts to wear? Also would this be easy to do? Cheers

   If you have the right tools,its straight forward job.
   Ive built many axels up over the years..

   Sorry for the thread hijack but I'm just about to rebuild our beam, unfortunately the son knocked the bearings out & when the new ones have come they are 2 different ones per side. One is slightly wider than the other, which goes to the inside of the car & which to the outside, my logic is the outside one would be the slightly wider one but would like confirmation.
