Radiator fan problems

   Hello I have a Saxo 1.1 desire, my fan seems to kick in a lot when the engine is running and immediately after switching the ignition off, I've checked my water level and it's fine and the gauge in the dials never goes above half way, now & then there is also a kind of burning smell?
   Does anybody have any idea what this could be?

   Any creamy gunge deposit around the oil filler cap?

   I just went and had a look there was very slight bit of gunge on the cap but that's about it

   Scrap that I didn't read your comment properly this gunge was on the water cap on radiator
