JP4 in a Saxo VTR (JP/JP+)

I am looking to put a JP4 engine into my VTR soon. I see a lot of threads talking about how I should combine the J4 (Saxo VTS) bottom end with the JP4 (C2 VTS) top end to make a better engine.

I only have a VTR engine at the moment (not sure if it is JP or JP+). Would it be better value-for-money power wise to simply buy a JP4 engine and put some aftermarket cams in it, or would it be better to buy a JP4 engine, a J4 engine and then put these cams in it.

Also, is the VTR inlet manifold the same as the VTS manifold?

Wouldn't it be cheaper to get a J4 engine (out of a saxo VTS or 106 GTI) and go for aftermarket cams. Engines are getting pretty cheap for them now and there'd be more to choose from.

It's the JP4 (out a C2 VTR) and the J4 engine that people combine. I think you put J4 standard cams in a JP4 and you can get 120-130 BHP.

The C2 VTS has the JP4S engine that has 125BHP as standard and has a metal inlet manifold.

As for the VTR inlet they are different to a VTS and I'd imagine they wouldn't fit.

What do you think will end up with a better car overall? A combined JP4/J4 engine, or just a VTS engine with aftermarket cams in the VTR?

I'd be looking to get around 140/150 BHP at the end of it (obviously with a few more mods). I've read about people putting a JP4 engine with aftermarket cams, closed induction kit and 4-2-1 mani into a Saxo (with a standard Saxo ECU) and getting 150+ BHP.

If it were me I'd go cammed j4 and cut a lot of the hassle out as its not exactly a drop in job due to various reasons but not too difficult . Most people go for jp4 due to them being lower mileage and more modern but will make less power than a good j4 which is easily capable of those figures you said. Either way you chose though you will be satisfied
