Important! : Another issue with vibra technics engine mount

  1. #1
So after my engine mount nuts came loose I was forced to cut the bolt out and got a replacement but my problem is should the bolt go through the silver engine mount bracket and the hole that's in the chassis underneath cos if it does the bolts not long enough but then how would I hold a spanner on it to tighten it.

    Anyone help? Thanks

I've found my access hole behind wheel liner but the bolt doesn't go that far.

    Hole behind wheel liner

That hole was probably used when the original mount was fitted to help with doing it up.
The mount will suspend the arm bit that bolts to the engine, it shouldn't have direct contact with the chassis.

Thanks Alex but how do I hold the bolt on the bottom while I tighten the nut on the top?

Edited my previous with a link to some pics.

I did mine up off the car but loose enough to allow me to move the mount over the threads on the chassis.
After bolting it to the engine and chassis I used a large allen key positioned underneath to lock the head of the bolt (place it between the bolt head and the ally arm).

Thanks Alex will have a look at the link now mate.
Do you think it will be safe enough to lift the engine up on the jack high enough to to it the same way you suggested? Thanks

nope, the big bolt just goes through the arm and bush.

sticking it through the chassis defeats the object.

Thank you mate for I would check before I continued with it.
I may have to make the hole in the chassis a lil bigger to get the 12mm bolt through it and just have it going through arm and mount as you said.

I can only imagine it came loose as it wasn't tightened correctly.

Now I'm even more confused as I don't use the standard buffer on my mount but just found this picture and they use it.
I always though you did away with the stock buffer but after seeing this do you keep it?

The buffer stops a lot of back and forth play in the engine. I used a solid mount from a peugeot 406 instead of the shitty peugeot/cit one.

^that one, and trimmed a bit off it so it wasnt rubbing the chassis.

Standard ones look like this and are pretty crap:

Great news guys finally got the mount fitted and set up the correct way.

Alex - I managed to wedge a filer on the bottom bolt head while I tightened the nut.
    Worked a treat mate.

Took the car out for a quick run and seemed to drive a treat, everything felt solid and could feel how well the engine mount really worked when I put the acceleraterpeddle down and shifted gear, never felt like that before always felt shakey.

Big thanks to everyone that gave advice, always appreciated on here by me.

Gonna go over the car at the week end and make sure everything is nice and tight, ie bolts and nuts.

    Glad you got it sorted.
Have you got the upper and lower gearbox ones done? Having all 3 makes a difference.

I did buy all 3 mate in the set from spoox but the garage never fitted the lower gearbox one it came back in my spares, no idea why lol.

This is what's currently on the gearbox, is it a standard one?

  14. #14
    Here's my gearbox one Alex

And look how much thread was not showing past the nut on the mount that came loose lol

I now have about 1 inch of thread now threw the nut

one on the gearbox isn't standard ^^

That definitely wasn't done up enough. Doesn't even look like the bolt was on the nylon.
Lower one on gearbox looks like a powerflex.
  17. #17
Yeah the lower mount is a powerflex mount. If you want to tighten things up that little bit more do the little fork bush, a lot of people overlook these and if the rest of the mounts are solid it puts the strain on that little standard bush back there.

Ha ha I no Alex no wonder it fell to bits.
If the lower gear box mount is a powerflex guess it's a bonus.

Thanks mate I will look into one of these without fail.

I've solid mounts in my S1 and it took me months to figure out why my engine was still knocking about when it was being (ab)used. It was that little bush all along, £20 and it's a night and day difference.
