Knocking noise after engine mount issues

  1. #1
Sorry to carry on with this guys lol but since I've fixed my engine mount that came loose car seems to have a knocking noise at around 30+ only when I take my foot of the accelerator.
Couldn't see anything loose like the exhaust etc but I no it didn't do it before the mount came loose.

    Any ideas guys?

    Thanks again

    Is it a constant knock?
Does it sound like its from the engine or from a driveshaft?
  3. #3
Sounds more like it's coming from passenger side Alex not engine?
  4. #4
Only does it when I take foot of accelerator pedal.
Wonder if something has been disturbed with me jacking engine up
  5. #5
It sounds just like when exhaust knocks against car but exhaust looks OK to me

I'd go down under with a torch and give things a tug ;-) see if anything is loose or looks like it could knock.

what about condition of other mounts? make sure your wheel bolts are tight, sounds silly but it happens

Ye I checked the other mounts after I fixed the engine mount mate but will be sure to check the wheels.

Ok guys had another look under the car today and did notice there is movement in the engine, even when the car is idling.

Should there be that much movement?

There's one on the manifold mate?
  17. #17
I believe my year 106 only has the one lambda mate
  18. #18
I thought all gti/vts's only had one lambda?

That's what I too believe Steve

my vts has the green and blue lambda. was just wondering cos when the o2 sensor was unplugged on my vts it made the idle go all over the place just like your video. and obvs when i plugged it back in it ran fine without the engine shaking about like yours.

just a thought to help solve your problem

Hmmm do you have a picture mate of your 2 lambda,s and what year is the vts. Mine is a 1997 year.
Here's my lambda shown in piccy.
    Thanks

2001 vts ive no pics too cold outside now lol its just the blue and green sensor the green one is the o2 sensor so i sleeved it as there is no longer a Cat in my car.

iirc single plug or mk1 vts' have the single black lambda connector. not sure what this is i.e pre cat or after cat (o2 sensor) if you know where im coming from lol ive sort of strayed from your initial problem but its something ive noticed. has it always shook about like that? since the exhaust was put in?

ill do some searching on it also

Finally guys I've got to the bottom of it lol.

Got car up as high as the axle stands would go to and started checking every nut making sure it was tight.
Got to the lower gearbox mount and hey presto, see video.

As you can see in the video it was that loose I was rocking it be hand that explains the really bad knocking noise.

Then I checked the nut by hand and it was spinning loose by hand.

So all tightened up and then went over everything in the bay.

Noticed my strut brace had been rubbing on the coil pack cover.

And here's one of the engine mount bolt now that's been sorted
Plenty of thread through the nut

So took the car out and is spot on now. Feels great and nice and tight and no knocking noises.

To every one that helped and commented big thanks always appreciated guys.

    Glad you got it sorted.
I had the same issue with my upper brace and the jp4 covers, the vibratechnics hold the engine slightly higher. Not got round to it yet but was going to weld on some strut strengthening plates to see if it raised it enough.

Thanks Alex Ye was so happy when I took it out and didn't have any knocks or bangs lol.
I was going to put some thick washers or a thin spacer under the strut brace but don't think the strut bolts are long enough.
Wonder if anyone else on here overcome it.

Alex - just came across this, seems to work

I'd thought about spacers too but wasn't sure if it would stress the brace with it not being flat.
