406 Brembos

  1. #1
I'm looking at doing the 406 Brembo upgrade on a 16 GTi, but looking at old threads it looks like the 283mm discs are no longer available, only 288mm.

Has anyone else done this upgrade lately?

Car will hopefully be pushing the 170bhp mark in the new year, will have piper BP285H cams, 4-2-1 manifold, straight through exhaust, BMC CDC enclosed air intake.

All the bushes have already been uprated to black series, GAZ Coilovers fitted, new rear beam with uprated Black series bushes fitted and vibra Technics engine mounts have also been fitted.

Just the brakes that need a bit of attention.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Change the filter to a standard box plus a better filter, I have the same mods as you are going for and unmapped I made 141 bhp, mapped I'd probably get 160 at a push

isn't it 283mm discs from a Xantia you need? someone posted that they were from a V6 but i'm 99% certain they run 288 up front (along with different hubs and calipers to the standards)

you will definately be able to get hold of 283mm xantia discs though

I will be fitting the 283 x 26 from the 206 RC,I gave up reading all of the threads, this comes from a reliable source and I trust them so I will go this way.

most of it comes down to working with the offset of the caliper to the disc and the disc to the hub so they don't squeal. the 406 coupe has low or 0 offset from the hub to the disc, so you need to find a disc to fit the saxo hub that brings the disc into the middle of the caliper as opposed to the front of it. the Xantia disc is taller though so brings the face of the disc back

at least thats my general idea of it

I'll take some picture of the caliper and disc fitted when they arrive.

Sorry thread hi-jack but I have tried the search & not go a suitable answer, which ECU are you running to get mapped, I thought (possibly incorrectly) the standard ECU couldn't be mapped.

how much heavier are the 28*'s than the 266's?
i was looking at 266 as the parts are much easier to source.

can you not get the bits from pug/citroen?
when i was looking into brake conversions before, they werent that much more expensive to buy brand new when you bear in mind second hand parts off another motor could be faulty etc

The 283 x 26 weighs 6.8 kg per disc, the 406 4 Pot 2.8 kg per caliper, the parts are easy enough to search for the 406 conversion too if you know where to look.

You can buy them brand new anywhere else but you can also get them from the dealership,up to you where you want to go.

The calipers are on the way... So too late for me turn back now. I'll give the xantia discs a go, there's plenty on eBay. If they squeal I'll have do a little more digging around and see if I can resolve the issue.

Are the calipers brand new? They play a big part in the "squeal" sound they might produce.

I use 206 gti 180 discs on mine

Work perfectly fine but do squeel abit

Are these the 283x26? Are you using the plain OE ones? Squeal can be reduced by using grooved discs like the Brembo Max but they are not cheap.

The calipers are used,l and look in good condition. I may get them rebuilt though if you're saying this helps with the squeel... I'll look for the gti 180 discs too which are grooved.

Are standard length braided hoses long enough to fit the brembos or will I need them slightly longer?

I'm going trough the hoses part now,you need longer hoses,as the standard length will stretch under heavy steering as the Brembo caliper sits lower and further from the hub,and you'll need the "Banjo" type fitting with a 20 degree end that connects to the caliper.

I've checked the length just now,40 cm front hoses with Banjo fittings should fine,I've checked this without the calipers fitted so double check before just in case but I'm pretty confident that they can reach safely on both side on full lock once everything is in place.

Yeah the plain oe ones, the squeeling doesn't bother me like but next set of pads I will be putting grooved discs on
