Squeeking when cold and lots of electricals switched on

  1. #1
Got a squeaking that only noticeable when car is cold for the 1st few minutes especially with damp atmosphere then disappears after a few minutes, much worse when under electrical load. I'm guessing alternator belt, the pulleys belts and waterpump all done last year.
Is it just a case of two small bolts undone slightly or do i remove them completely before adjusting the big bolt on the bottom anti clockwise?

is it a bad squeak or just a light one. Belts tend to whistle a little in damp weather like you mentioned. Worse under electrical may indicate a weak battery.

Most likely the alternator pulley especially if it's the standard one,it has a rubber element and when wears out starts to make noises.

Was alternator belt, I bought some anti slip spray and it cured it completly so just need to tighten belt ( never been done before ) but replaced 1 year ago also I've never done it before and don't want to do it too tight so might get my mechanic to do it :-s

would like to but how do I know how tight to do it .... half a turn? is it just a case of removing the 2 screws then adjusting the big one? sorry bit clueless

PS love the 205 wheels - I would put mine on but not lowered so worried would look a bit tractorish..... how low are you?

Just do it so it doesn't squeak or squeal but not so tight it whines. There is an adjuster bolt below the alternator itself on a little bracket, as you aren't changing the belt no need to remove anything just tighten it up a little bit. May help to just slacken the mounting bolts a smudge though but you shouldn't usually have to if it's only minor adjustment.
The 205s are gone now but the back on mine is around 60mm ish

Adjusting the tension on the VTR is even easier as the whole set up is designed better in my opinion, once you have loosened the two alternator bolts just tighten the bolt that acts as a tensioner until under thumb pressure there is approximately 5.0mm of free movement at the mid-point between the pulleys,on the longest belt run.

Rotate the crankshaft trough two complete turns (clockwise of course) then recheck tension.

I was wrong about it making a difference having lots of electricals on, it is slightly better since i used the spray on the belt but for example at low revs you put your foot down slightly at it still makes the chirping slipping noise.
After 10 15 mins is fine.
Also checked battery a healthy 12.1 with no engine on
I was onboard with what you said Veriron until the crank it over by hand a couple of times bit ....

We just had the same after a belt change, couldnt seem to tighten the

absolutly jack..new nolt M6 60mm fitted and all is perfect..
you were spot on there except for one thing there wasn't even a bolt there ! so no wonder I was a bit confused as its my 1st time trying to adjust it.
Mechanic found one tightened it up and its much better still the slight chirp when cold but much better than it was.

WD is surely going to lubricate the pulley and make the belt slip more?

I'd fire another new belt on it for the whole £4 they cost from ECP and 10 minutes they take to change (For a novice)

Try a little WD40 on one of the pully wheels and see if that stops it, I would try the alternator pully first, then the belt itself, with all your touching it with dirty hands the WD40 will act as a cleaner..

Not too much mate just a little squirt, while its running..
WD40 dries out quite quickly, either the belt is slipping or it needs changing.or the alternator bearings are faulty.
