Do Cambelts Deteriorate With Age?

  1. #1
Just purchased a saxo 1.1 2002 with only 16000 miles on the clock, should i change the cambelt?

Essentially yes, most parts will deteriorate with age, especially rubber components.

Things like cambelts are best changed at xxxxx miles or x number of years, "whichever comes first".

If it hasn't had one in it's life its probably worth getting one. I picked up a 9k 106 a few years back and some of the rubber components (driveshaft CV boots, tyres!) had started to crack/perish, even though it had done no miles

Best put a kit and waterpump on i guess, Gates used to be the belt to get at one time, does that still stand?
    Thanks

Exactly that, the rubber dries out and cracks over time. Tyres are the same.

May as well do the pump while you're at it for how much they cost.

Not personally changed a waterpump yet but I've heard they are usually a nightmare to get out

I agree, best to do it its not a huge cost and get that waterpump changed.

I will be doing mine incidentally over the next month or so, not sure about the pump being a mare but we will see

It's weird man, I've had some that come
Straight out with no issues and I've had some
Where I've had to spend an hour with a hammer, a chisel and an air chisel to get the fuckers out!

you may fair better with the ali block of a 1.1 when getting the pump out rather than the cast blocks of some 1.4s and the 1.6s. Everyone ive tackled has been a horrid job to remove

I wouldn't even drive that car if it's still on it's original belt! Chances are even if it looks ok it could give at any moment.
