MK1 VTS - Carbs Conversion help

  1. #1
    Hello,

I'm new to this forum so hope I'm posting in the right place.

I bought a MK1 VTS today to work on.

I bought it as a non driver although it starts and the engine runs. The previous owner has put ZX6R 36mm Carbs on but has drilled the jets out to big so its running rich. Hes told me that the engine is good and was fine before but since he has overdrilled the jets he hasnt had time for it.

It has a low pressure fuel pump for the carbs and has had cat cams put in but the throttle cable needs to be connected.

    What I want to know is;

Is it going to be worth me fixing the jets and working on getting the car fully running on the carbs.

Or just getting the standard intake setup back on and reverting back to standard?

You lot will know whether these carbs are any good and how much works involved so I would appreciate you opinion and experience on what will be needed to get it running.

Ive also been told these carbs can be run off the standard ecu???

If this is going to cost me anymore than £600ish then I may just revert it

    Thanks

You need something to run the ignition timing correctly so you're either looking at getting your stock ECU mapped to suit with 2D ignition tables to suit your carbs having no load input or fit something stand alone and get that mapped, which would be more expensive but more people would be able to do it.

you also still need the carbs set up so the likelihood of finding someone who can do all of it is pretty small. I can do your ECU but I don't do carbs. I don't know anyone doing bike carbs who has a clue about ECUs.

If I were you I'd put the stock intake back on, and get your ECU mapped to suit your cams. You'll most likely get better torque with a stock intake anyway.

does earlier model intake setups and pug gti setups fit a 1997 vts?

Only differences are single plug or three plug ECU, changed to three plug around 2000 on Saxo and 2001 on 106.

so everything is compatible other than the ecu?

would be very suprised if it would ever pass a cat test for mot with carbs+ cams fitted
--dump them and go back to std
