Getting up to temp

    No matter what my car takes ages to get upto 90 degrees (middle of the gague which is correct for my car vectra c) had the thermostat replaced twice... But it still takes for ever... It gets upto just over 90 when in traffic but as soon as I get going it drops to about 80 degrees and stays there until I stop again... Sounds like a thermostat problem but it's just not curing it.... What elce could cause it? Coolant temp sensor? Car use to warm up in less than 10 minutes and stick at 90 degrees no matter what ??

    Okay, been doing a little research, apparently the standard factory fitted stays open at 92 degrees, but now been changed to open at 82degrees instead?? Surely this is bad for the engine? Don't know if any one knows about this? But I want one like my original that stays at roughly 90 degrees?

    Won't do it any harm running colder, just won't run as well on fuel...

    have you tested the stat and is it closing properly? Cheap ones can be out by bloody miles, they might be stamped 92/82 but can open at lower, higher or even not at all.

    Well I've tried another stat today, it's exactly the same. Takes an age for the needle to even move on my commute to work, (20 mins down the m1) and that's when I come off at the slip road and come to a stop? It then gets to just I 80c before I'm at work. Before hand it was at 90c in less than 10 mins and stayed there give or take 2c?? I'm sure this won't be good when winter comes with regards warming up... ��

    Take the stat out and put it in a tub of boiling water with a thermometer, watch the thermometer as the water gets cooler until the stat opens then you have your closing temp, maybe that the stat you put in to test it with is the same as the other one? Try a different make...

    Just an idea but could have something to do with heater matrix.... Weird and wonderful things that they are it wouldn't surprise me..

    You've not got an airlock have you?

    If it was an airlock you'd be overheating straight away as no coolant would be going round the engine..
