Hydraulic press purchase query.

   Hi there,I'm looking to purchase a press to make my life easier for removing/installing wheel bearings,bushes,balljoint etc,I'm just a bit unsure on what capacity would be suitable? Would 6 ton be enough? This was the one I was interested in:

   would go for a 20 my next door neighbor has a 12 and it wasnt man enough to shift the rear wheel bearing off my focus

   I've got a 20 tonne and it will do everything on the saxo, balljoints, wheel bearings etc. Just get the best one you can afford, 20 tonne may be a bit overkill but it was only a cheapish one at around £130 so it didn't break the bank and does everything I need. I think a 12tonne would probably be enough to work on saxo parts, but I do think that 6tonne will struggle with a few things.

   Got a 12 tonne and that's shifted everything that I've thrown at it so far.
   
   Local Peugeot Specialist has had a 10 tonne for donkeys years and they say it's never failed to do anything hence why they've not bothered upgrading

   Been watching ebay for a few weeks looking for a cheap one to come up. Still not sure between 10/12 ton and 20 though.

   Thank you,will probably invest in a 20 ton one as overkill as it might me,only 30£ difference from the 12 ton anyway.

   Just thought i'd add to this, the one I bought they don't sell any attachments for it so you do have to get a bit creative that's the only thing i'd knock it for but I guess you can't expect everything for the price.

   Cheap presses are shit, end up breaking them fast. If you are going to buy "cheap" try and go for something with an overkill rating for what you are going to be using it for, then maybe it will last.

    Personally I don't see a problem with the eBay ones. maybe if you use it everyday but for home use its not like you're gonna be changing ball joints and wheel bearings every day of the week so the money is better spent elsewhere like on a good jack and/or hand tools

    My 12ton shifts most things,normaly with little help from wd40 too..

    I've used the 6 ton press for a few components now and can share my experience with it.
    
    So far I've removed the front hub,gearbox fork smaller bush and installed the axle bearings (bronze ones not OEM).
    
    I've found out that it doesn't require much effort once you position the component correctly, the hardest bit was infact trying to find a good position for the parts I needed to work on and make sure they were flat and not inclined with the press shaft and leave clearance for the bearing/bush to come out,you only get 2 steel plates about 5mm thick and about 10x5mm which I found weren't enough for the job so having additional plates and drift to push on the part to press out helps a lot.
    
    Next I would like to try and press out the wishbone balljoint and bushes,will see how it goes.

    I have a 30ton 2 stage ram press and quite often it can up close to 10 ton to move a wheel brg out of a housing --once moved it usually drops back to 3-4 tons
    I use various packing plates --but always at least 20mm thick + 150mm wide or they will bend with a tough job
    it will depend on how wide the gap is between the frame supports how thick they need to be --mine is around 180mm gap between the support plates you sit the packing plates on
