Alternator problem? Opinions please!

   Afternoon all,
   
   I just wanted a second opinion, I own a Mk1 VTS and when I turn the ignition on (one turn) the battery light doesnt come on.
   
   I think its the alternator as my power steering doesn't kick in until I've driven a few feet.
   
   Any confirmation/suggestions would be appreciated

   I think a way to check the alternator and power steering is to turn on car rev a bit and check if the steering is lighter, if it is then the alternator is probably at fault
   
   correct me if am wrong am not a mechanic by any means

   check small connection on alternator --very prone to breaking
