106 GTi "misfire"

    Pug has developed a strange one... It sounds like a misfire, however it's running smoothly, running on all 4 cylinders, only seems a tad down on power but stinks of fuel especially when booting it, there's a noise up front which is like taptaptaptaptaptap which follows engine speed and can be heard from the exhaust also, only under load, neutral revs up freely. Only seems low RPM too seems to clear out higher up, but hard to tell as car is so loud (Saxsport+421 mani) I've recorded a video but it's very hard to hear in video no were near as clear as I wanted! But hopefully someone can shed some light!

    Tapping or is it a ticking sound?It could be a faulty injector(stink of fuel)Or worn tappets (tapping sound)

    It's hard to describe, I guess it's a ticking sound.. Louder under load and louder the harder you press on the loud pedal. The sound transmits out the exhaust too. Imagine when a cars running on 3 cylinders.. That noise but less severe and it's still running on 4 cylinders, doesn't feel down on power but it's certainly not right, maybe a little down on power not much though still bloody quick

    Have a look at your injector seals,and the fuel line that goes to them and look for leaks.

    I shall have a look, I also noticed today my rocker covers were leaking so changed them over to JP4 ones, the spark plug bores are submerged in oil too and the HT leads are pretty oiled up. Would this be a possibility? It's only since fitting port and polished TB this mosfire has happened mind!

    You might have a leaking or blocked up crankcase breather pipe.

    Is that the one on a 90 degree bend on the right hand side of the engine inlet side? It's not leaking, it was a long time ago but been sealed up since!

    Took it all off to make sure; removed te 10mm that holds it to block, and blow it all through with an air line, no blockage, it's ctually pretty clean.. Also took out spark plugs and cleaned them, they was all caked in oil! However all the plugs was brown but spark plug no4 (left to right) was black and dry with half of the electrode being a white colour

    Also checked around injectors area etc, no signs of leaking, no fuel smell - all bone dry... Very odd

    Right got video under bonnet, noise is coming from cylinder 1 area... It's a lot louder with HT lead removed

    I think (hope) it's tappets and nt something more serious, the sound started after fitting port and polished throttle body, I checked the oil and it was low (just below minimum, oops) and the car is overdue a service, so hopefully a service, clear out with seafoam and some lifter treatment of the noise hasn't gone will sort it. Unless it's soemthig else obviously..
