Best way to pull the engine?

  1. #1
Gonna be pulling the engine and gearbox out of the vtr soon so I can refresh the engine bay and sort out any welding that needs doing, just wondered what do you think is the best method to pull it out? Will it come out in one go with the gearbox on or would it be best to remove the box first?

I will have an engine crane to lift it out. Cheers

Would say it's easier to unbolt from the gearbox, raise the engine up then push the car back out of the way.

Would the gearbox be able to stay in the bay and just pull the engine and then take out the gearbox afterwards? I'm just thinking if I took the gearbox off first id need to jack up the car and take it off but then the engine would only be held in by one mount, I think I may be thinking about this too much, I should probably just do it haha..

Yes mate it would, just make double sure that all of the cables are free and not snagged.

Cheers ill have a go at doing it that way then, will probably take the loom out aswell while I'm at it and give it a clean

no the box wont stay in there in its own and it would be nigh on impossible to remove the engine from the box in the engine bay.

remove the driveshafts and exhaust coolant hoses, gear rods, and unplug the loom, lift it out after removing the rad so you dont dent it.

I'm just thinking if I take the box off I'm gonna have to get it up on axle stands but then when its out the engine will need to be supported and I will probably need the car back on the ground to be able to lift high enough with the crane? Or are you saying take the whole lot out in one go?

always take it out in one go, its much easier.

TBF I've never done it that way or to be honest ever considered it on any FWD car.

Is there even enough room to unbolt the engine from the box & move it towards the drivers side to clear the input shaft from the clutch? If there is then it's probably a good way, as stripping down the suspension to get driveshafts out is a pain. I like Toyota's version of is that the driveshafts bolt to flanges on the gearbox, so once undone the engine/gearbox is easy to remove as one. Not sure they still do this though as it does add extra initial cost.

It's ok,it's just that lately everything I say a certain person always comes in & says the complete opposite.
