VTR running hot!!!

  1. #1
Hi guys, my 1,6 vtr is running hot, the fan starts up, even when driving concervatively on a cold day. In addition the temp gauge bobs up and down on occasion, but seems to do so mainly when the temp climbs to the top quarter of the gauge.
Hope you guys can help, where do i start looking/replacing???

Bleed the cooling system, you may have an air lock.

Ok could an air lock also be to blame for a slushing sound that i get in the bottom right side of the front of the car??

Yes mate, and probably the reason the temperature needle is fluctuating so much.

There are three bleeds. An allen key one on the top of the thermostat housing, one on the top of the radiator and one on a heater hose that looks like a tyre valve cap.

    easiest way to bleed
get a 2 litre coke bottle --cut bottom off --stuff it in rad with a rag fill right up --open bleeds when stopped --then run till it gets warm and stop --do again --run it up again -still with bottle full of water -then stop allow it to cool down open bleeds again --then remove bottle +fit rad cap
citroen have a special tool which is like that but has a cap cap adapator on it =+but no pressure cap
problem is that the top of rad is lower than heater etc --water don,t go uphill
other thing that worth doing if you have thermostat out is to drill a small hole inthe top edge of it --so air can pass even when thermostat is closed

That is so complicated to understand. Especially with the -- and no punctuation.
I made a guide for bleeding a while back that's easy to understand so the op might want to look at that. Also the Allen key bleed bolt on top of the thermostat housing can suffer from cross material oxidisation and can snap so be very careful.

Or fill it pointing up a very steep hill and then bleed it? :-)

usual reason for snapping is previous over tighetening of the bleed screw .
as it has a hole in it --which makes it weak --so just nip it --thats all
do not swing on end of allen key

Just adding my five eggs, when i've had an air lock i've bled just using the rear bleed nipple. The bleed nipple looks like a tyre valve cap,& it's always seemed to have worked for me.
