Exhaust knock on anti roll bar

  1. #1
Hello everyone. This is my first post on here. I recently very nearly sold my VTR but couldn't go through with it. So I've decided to keep it and sort out the niggles I've got with it.

The main one is a knocking noise that I need some help with. When the engine and exhaust have warmed up a bit, when I press the clutch in to change gear while driving, the centre section of the exhaust knocks on the anti-roll bar as if there is excess movement somewhere. Also when in reverse, as soon as I start moving, backwards there's the same knock. Does anyone know what this is as 'apparently' the exhaust is all fine....

I had a knock that sounded just like a CV joint failing - knocked on gear change, knocked on lift off, knocked on right turns.

Turned out it was the right hand side exhaust rubber on the rear muffler had detached itself and just needed hooking back on.

But... if you've already had the exhaust checked, it's probably not that? Have you tried rocking the car side to side to see if it makes the sound?

I have yes and it doesn't happen. There's also no noise when turning so don't think it's anything to do with the steering...

I'm wondering if it's a lower engine mount problem or an exhaust issue at the manifold end around the cat maybe?

Gotta say, this makes me think it's something drivetrain/engine related, rather than an exhaust problem. Especially if giving the exhaust a kick doesn't cause any sounds to happen.

I'd check gearbox mount, engine mounts, then wishbone mounts and drop links, in that order.

Will do. Thanks for the advice. I'm gonna get it over a pit and get someone to inch it forwards and backwards and see if I can see what's going on.....

check your engine mount under the car,its in the middle.
stops the engine rocking when changing gear and keeps it steady on tick over.

I'm checking this next. The only thing that's confusing me though is that it doesn't happen for the first 10 mins or so of driving. Only starts happening when the engine/exhaust is warm.

Anyone have any ideas why this might be???

Re-check the exhaust,it heats up and swells therefore can knock against things.

My exhaust bangs off the gear linkages after I smacked the manifold off a bump at 40mph and bent it slightly upwards.

have you fitted the exhaust yourself if you have it problaby needs to be lined up as it's too close to your anti roll bar
