locking the crank into place

   is there more than one place to lock the crank when setting up the timing?
   
   
   
   ive got both the cam locked and in place with the belt lines up ok withh but it out my 1 tooth on the crank?
   
   
   
   ive locked the crank through the little whole by the crank sensor on the bell housing at the fly if this is right?

   there is only 1 hole.
   if you look where the locking hole is you will see a large hole.
   above this is a 5mm-6mm hole, this is the locking hole.
   when looking at your block you can see a 'ridge' type thing, follow this with your finger and you will find it

   as williamvts said there is a 5mm hole right in the corner of the block casting above the large hole, use a allan key through this and check its in place properl, if you turn the engine by hand with a socket you will feel the allan key drop into the locking hole

   hi guys, i locked it via the other small hole next to where you feel it from?
   
   ive got the 3 lines on the belt to line up with each notch on the cams and crank which is right..... ive rotated the engine via the crank with a rachet and it seems to turn over ok with no problems.... so would this be alright?
   
   also as the engine has been turned at the crank the lines no longer match up with the notches on the camshaft... is this normal? it did all start of lined up.

   thats wrong. what lines on belt? you should lock the cams using the proper cam locking holes.

   you need to lock the crank using the proper hole as it mighe be putting your timing out incorrect as the crank will be further round if its locking into the grove through the small hole next the the big hole. also once you turn the engien round a few times the marking lines on the belt wont line up with the marks on the cam/crank again for quite a lot of engine rotations, i rotated mive over 30 times and it still didnt line up doesnt mean the timing is off jsut that it takes a while for the marks to come back round, however i you still need to lock the crank in the right place

   well the engine was at TDC and there are 3 lines on my new cam belt, all 3 lines lined up with each mark on the cams and crankshaft... also the cams were locked in the right place and the crank was also locked but it locked the crank via the other hold so maybe it was not locked right it was still locked with the line on the belt lineing up with the mark on the bottom pulley?

   take no notice of the lines mate. they need to be loced correct in all three places, if not then its not right.

    well like i said ive lined up the 3 lines and took the chance of turning the key as by hand it turned over ok with no problems and it runs better then it did before prob due to new head having different sensors!
    
    I'd rung peuegot to confirm the lines and they said "thats what they are for" lol being a bit cheeky about it.
    
    anyway, thanks for everyones help and im glad it's back on the road again. ready for sale now and start looking for another s14a or ibiza cupra in yellow just to annoy oz lol
