very low MPG, tappets??

my saxo has started to less and less MPG over the past month.
to start with i could get 350 per tank
then it went to 330 then 300 and now its at 280

could it be my tapets becasue it sounds like a tractor at the minute??

I take it; its all upto date service wise, oil etc..?
I can't see tappets causing poor mpg myself.

mines gone shit too, could be that fact my fuel filter keeps falling off tho

    ease off the throttle

i might just fill it up and leave it on my drive for a year, thats the best MPG
£35 worth of petrol that lasts a year

i recently had a similar problem.

i never put my foot down and from driving economically my vtr always returns 48-52 mpg!

so when it started to do 35-40 with no change in driving i did think something was up.

changed all filters, oil change plugs. e.t.c
then found out that there was a hole in my fuel filter and fuel was just constantly dripping out!

check your filter is intact, they can get holes in from stones or wotnot flying up from the road.

its just underneath the car infront of the passenger side rear wheel arch

tappets shouldn't be the problem either..peoples suggestions seem to be the right way about it.. from what ive read..
But also check what petty stations ur going to,
Iv heard and does make some sort of sense that cheaper fuel places not saying they do and these are on the lines of stations i mean possibly not themm like sains, asda tesco etc have cheaper petrol which means its waterd down and produces less mileage economical value and performance issues.
NOT always the case, but people have had water in their tanks due to some stations watering it down. But its mainly bcos its cheaper fuel cheaper end of the trade so uses more gases/fumes rather than oil in the petrol so burns quicker.
Might not be right, but try going at shell or texaco for a month see how much u get out of them in a full tank then try a place like i mentioned see what u get out of that.. mgiht be a difference might not be. cud just be threason if ur services are coming out A-oK!
