Oil breather are a very important part of the engine that allows the engine to breath. How do they do this? Well kiddies sit down & I shall tell you.

All the time your engine is runnin the oil is moving about (hopefully) get hot and needs fresh air to breath this is where the engine breather system comes in. If this system gets clogged or you didnt have one at all the oil would go very sludgy like old CVH's & Kent engines form days go past.

In the OE setup the breather tube from the rocker cover goes into the airbox, but if this is changed for a aftermarket cone filter (Induction Kit) then most have a opening in the tubing for the breather pipe to be re-attached or offer a small filter which takes its place.

To clean the breather tube unclip and remove the tube (It maynot want to move at 1st but will with a good tug) then just clean in your mums washing up bowl with fairy which should clear any sludge.

Its worth also checkin the throttle body as the breather can sometime take a small amount of oil with it which can get pretty mucky.

Some of you may already know all this but its worth mentionin for the people who don't.

breather filters are illegal not to mention shit. if you want to do it properly without plumbing it back into the inlet them buy a catch tank.
  5. #5
Are they really illegal only I had one on me VTR and it went through MOT with it on
  6. #6
yes they are really illegal- it's illegal to vent the engine directly into the atmosphere. get a catch tank.

You got any links to a specific saxo one mate. Want to look into this mate as i want to do stuff properley.

mine has gone through 2 mot's with it fitted.surely if it was illigal they would fail it
  9. #9
ok are there any advantages of catch tanks?
  10. #10
yes the oil vapour doesnt cover your engine bay with shite and if you get a shiny one is makes your bay look nicer
for the 3rd time- breathers are illegal, only legal ways are either plumb the breather back to inlet or catch tank. mot tester wouldn't fail it as i doubt many of them know it's actually a fail as how many testers know about modified car parts?

i read a comment in a thread about a vid of a highly tuned clio( cant remember the thread in the last couple of days) that said something about they loved the sound of the catch tank, does it produce a noise then?

catch tanks dont make noise! unless your engine is shagged and you produce so much oil vapour it runs into the catch tank at a liter a min lol!!

as said it is illegal to have a breather, but no1 really cares.....

mocal do good catch tanks.. or simply make your own!

on my track car ill be using a pugsport grpN one
