Dimma Grille help

  1. #1
Received my Dimma grille today

Went straight to Halfrauds to get toys. Can someone confirm i'm doing this right for peace of mind please? this is my first proper painting job!

    Bought assorted abrasive papers. 240. 600. 800 and 1200

    Red plastic primer

    Wicked red paint

    Clear Lacquer

I rubbed the (second hand) grille down with 600 (dry) 800 (wet) then 1200 (wet) then dry with the 1200 and applied my primer. looks ok so far.

I assume i wait for the primer to dry, rub it down with 1200 again. apply another coat of primer then leave for 24 hours? and is it relatively the same process with the paint and lacquer?

Any help will be greatly appreciated

yes just another coat of primer then paint, dont rush it just build up the layers, then leave to dry fo a few days, sand the paint with the finest paper you have, but do it wet then put your laquer on

might seem weird sandind paint but gives you a better finish

hope it works out well mate and get some prgress pics up in your thread

so, when i before i apply the lacquer i should still rub it down with a very fine wet paper? your just a wealth of jhelp u!

dont bother rubbing it down before lacquering. build up your primer, then flat it down with 800 then 1200 until its smooth and feels right, dust on your red paint wait for it to start to go off before dusting on another coat (dusting it on is safer, less likely to get a run lol), continue this until its all covered and you cant see any primer. wait for it to dry then apply lacquer

This is what it looks like just after primer, that dried very smooth, so i applied another light coat and that will dry soon. I'm sure predator VTr said rub it down before applying lacquer, which is correct?

well just pros actually rub the paint down before applying laquer, gives a nice finish, you just need to do it ever so lightly, should actually say this on the spray cans, think its on the laquer one or paint one :

Your right mate, says it on the lacquer tin!!! will do it that way very carefully, QUOTE "use 1200 grit wet and dry paper and plenty of water to achieve a matt surface. Removal of the glossy paint surface is necessary to produce the correct lacquered finish" Straight from the horses mouth, or halfrauds can as it were

so hows the paintsing coming on
  15. #15
i personally would have used a grey primer buddy
  16. #16
but its red paint going on, surely then a red primer is used? The last coat of primer has been left to dry overnight, in a couple of hours i will begine the painting process
  17. #17
You are supposed to use grey primer with every colour EXCEPT red, you are supposed to use RED primer for RED.

Ok need a bit advice now, i've done two coats of paint and some areas are smooth, some are rough. and its a bit "orange peel" in areas. do i just rub it down again an do another coat etc? not wure how to get it as near perfect as possible without a proper spray gun and booth etc

By sounds of it you have put 2 much paint on in 1 go. I would wet an dry it till smooth then apply a few more layers of paint and use 1200 (wet) inbetween. Im no expert but when i have sprayed i have always used 1200 inbetween layers for the last few and always got a great finnish.

    Hope this helps

yeah been doing that, maybe try and be less liberal with the paint, its so hard to get the right amount of pressure on lol. Cheers lads
