Gearbox Oil Additives?

  1. #1
    How do!
T plate VTR. Gearbox whining through gears. Can't afford a box right now, so what's the score with Gearbox oil additives and all that? Do they work and are they worth forking out money on? Also how do I get the stuff into the box?

they wouldn't stop a gearbox whining, you wouldn't put engine oil additives in your engine to cure an engine problem would you? try changing the gearbox oil and if that doesn't stop it then you'll have to investigate the 'box further.

    Ow! Don't be shy.
Been reading on t' web about them and sites saying that the stuff in em like molybdenum formaldehyde (or whatever) bonds to gear teeth and "reduces noise and prevents further wear" or is it all cack? Do STP or Slick 50 products not do exactly what they say on the tin?

i hear what you're saying but at the end of the day you can cure the symptoms or cure the problem, ie painkillers can numb toothache but they wont treat the cause if you get me. just depends which is the cheapest option for you i suppose

    Hi,

Was looking at it as a cheap quick temp fix for a big hairy ass ugly looking problem that's looming on the horizon - ie me needing a new box.
Xmas is coming & funds are goin on something super special for the missus, cos I been spending too much money on "That damn car".

What else are credit cards for though eh?!

I just got a 2nd hand box with 12k on the clock for my 99vtr, with 1 driveshaft (cos it was fucked) for £218 delivered. With new driveshaft seals, and gators.

Have a go at fitting it. Or, go to a garage and ask a mechanic if he does jobs on the side?
