Tapping noise!

  1. #1
Since last week my car (mk2 vtr) has started making a sort of tapping noise! At first i never though anything of it and just thot it was because the car was cold but now its doing it all the time!

It does it on idle and when driving! When in the car it sounds as if its coming from the drivers side of the engine bay, but when i lifted the bonnet, it sounds as if its comming from around the intake manifold! When you rev the engine the tapping noise speeds up, sort of like the rate of the spark plugs sparking or sumthing like that!

Has anyone experianced this before? Any help would be apprectiated!

    Thanks
    Ben

Mine does it aswell its the injecters, thats what i have been told. mine is a 1.1 single point injection, i have changed the air filter so you can hear it more.

the injectors are noisy could be them

    could also be tappets

yup think mines is just about the same as that just now, been told its tappets got another thread in this section about it.

i thought the tappets were self adjusting tho?

So is there anything i can do/check, 2 confirm what it actualy is thats making the noise! Are injectors pricey to replace?

mine used to do it , when i had the car serviced this seemed to fix the problem

where is it coming from the front or rear or the car? every car ive had that has been doing a tapping noise it has been the heat shield at the front part of the exhaust, you can pay a tenner maximum to get this removed, or just remove it yourself, it could be that.

    yeah...

    my engine taps when idle..

its very likely to be the tappets

    just get them adjusted...

i know saxo vts are hydrolicso self adjust, not sure about a vtr though

garage charge around 60quid to re-adjust them but it might not make a significant difference

Hi I have the same problem with my vts, it started off with a really really really loud tapping noise like I thought it was ready to explode, so I took the front rocker cover off as it was coming from the front and found that one off the tappets were floppy by pushing on them with something. After doing this I put everything back together started it up the tap was still there, drove like 50 yards and it went away lol and now there's a sort of nocking noise 😬 witch is slowly getting worse, not sure if it's the tappet any suggestions?

On the vts the lifters are hydraulic so if they are tapping they aren't pumping up with oil as they sold either through lack of it, being gummed up or wear. Try new oil but if they are bad a clean out of the all will help (dismantling each) or actual replacement of each lifter
