Can a tuned vtr beat a standard vts?!

    Im just wondering for a 20bhp difference is the 7 insurance groups higher really worth it?? If you get cams, new manifold etc etc what can you get a vtr up too?? sorry if tat sounds stupid but ive always wanted to know!! & who better to ask than u guys!!!

    i reckon it could but it would cost a hell of a lot to get the vtr to that stage. The money you'd spend would easily cover the extra insurance on the vts

    Depends claire,id say get a vts engine but diff people will adv you to tune the vtr,im 17 and i payed £1700 for Vtr insurance,ive recently done a vts conversion and now im paying £2500,its well worth it

    Cammed VTR with manifold etc id say about 120-130bhp ?? not that sure tho

    Put simply yea, but the amount you would pay for the mods and declaring them would probably be more/the same as a standard VTS plus extra insurance, and the VTS 16v lump will have more potentil overall, its basically all about how deep your pockets are

    The mods you would have to do would make your VTR insurance even more than just buying a VTS to start of with.

    But the VTR engine can be tuned to beat a standard vts

    tunes the vtr,manifold,chip-remap,full exhaust,cam's,stage 3 head,strip the car out,keep the small wheels on,but remember if you upgrade your engine sort your brakes out 2

    dump a 106 rally gearbox in a VTR & it will beat a 16valver! gearbox = £300 tops!

    my camed VTR was running 115bhp and kept with gti/vts untill 5-6k rpm

    its not all about bhp though, perhaps in straight line drags it is, but around a circuit its the ability to carry speed around corners that makes a difference.

    This is why my old 205 Rallye with 91bhp and £3500 of redesigned suspension / track tyres was faster than Gti's

    true true but thats not the question here! add the gearbox jobs done end of! LOL
    205 rule mi16 205 are quicker than scoobie & mitzis on tracks if set up right so much fun!

    red lines at 110mph in 5th! but rapid!!! i could pull away in 5th gear!! plays with civic type R & st170s... great mod to do, shame i blew the diff really... my bad!

    Look at Alex's (cammedvtr) for instance.

    It's a 1998 S reg with 105k on the clock. It has been cammed, decat, miltek centre section, magnex back box, pipercross modified filter and it's putting out 122bhp at the wheels - now remember thats a 8 year old with that mileage. It's easily achieveable.

    Ive had a few mods done to myn manifold, full exhaust system, bmc, decat, piper 285 cam and vernier pulley, chipped and raised limiter i think it could easily see a vts off, and i think it will put a nail in the coffin once i get the remap done on saturday

    lol she was running sh***ty back then ive had it the garage today had the vernier pulley fitted and tappets and timing set up and tweaked feels alot more responsive

    If it was my money, IMO only:

    I would lightly tune the 8v engine, Airfilter, Manifold exhaust then just enjoy the car for 6-12months by this time you then wish to sourch a 16v lump or simply move onto somethin completely different?

    After a year of drivin your insurance should have dropped then take it from there. The 8v engine is a great little motor its a shame most people look straight past it in favour of the 16v.

    In simple, play with it for a while then see what happens after a year of driving

    Im sure cammedvtr got something like 122bhp from his VTR, iirc mods were manifold, induction kit, decat, straight through exhaust system, cams and a re-map! there may be something im missing but thats all i remember. so yes it can be done, nice to see someone doing something different though rather than ust dumping a VTS engine in there!

    Wow!! did this not cost you a fortune?? well if im honest i wudnt declare the mods on my insurance one min im like ok ill get a vtr then next im like no a vts!!! lol

    oooh i dunno!! suppose ill just have to wait and see what the funds are li9ke when the time comes!

    The only problem is im goin to uni next yr and i wont be able to get anything new until im finished. So i was thinkin of getting the vts and usin my loan to help!! I would have the money if my insurance is a max of £2500 and hopefully itll go down a gd bit after a few yrs!! but like i said im now on for the vts but 10mins later ill change my mind!!! lol

    Its alot of extra insurance just for that extra bhp, at the end of the day its your money but I really feel that even a VTR with a Induction Kit and a Cat Back exhaust would give you as much excitment as a standard VTS besides how long could you keep a Standard car for?

    I couldnt, I went from two cars down to one and swore I would leave it alone but take a look at the list under my signature . . . didnt stay standard for long.

    Would save or student loan for more improtant things like housing and beer :-)

    i had a simota enclosed, supersprint 4-2-1 manifold and a supersprint backbox on my old vtr, last time it was r/r it made around 109 bhp (it was 90 standard) was a great improvement over standard but my vts now which is standard would still kill it, i would take the advice above and do all the breathing mods.. enjoy it for a while then move on thats what i did..

    What cam is he using aswell i think its only a fast road not a rallaye/race one so its a lower lift too aint it and thats impressive bhp!

    When comparing engines there is a lot more to think about than BHP. Consider torque, and more importantly, torque spread
