Hi Spec 4 pot problem, Found the cause!!!

  1. #1
    Guys,

I fitted these about 800 miles ago, first 200 were slowly bedding them in and have had no problems till yesterday when I put my foot on the brake pedal and heard a very unhealthy crunching as the wheel rotated on the drivers side.

It's only when the foot is on the brake, running normaly (without pressing the brake), theres no noise at all, only when you push the pedal. I jacked the car up and spun the wheel which runs true and there was no noise and deviation while spinning. Checked all the nuts, they couldn't be any tighter, checked the droplink, wishbone etc all of which are fine and secure. I've been told it sounds like a warped disk

I won't get a chance till tomorrow to take the wheel of and spin the disk itself but was wondering if anyone had any idea's?

I have emailed Gareth at GS Motorsport asking, if it is a warped disk do I have any guarantee with the product etc.

    Cheers in advance.

a warped disc would also cause the steering wheel to judder when braking, does yours do this?
  3. #3
Ah right. No the wheel doesn't judder at all when braking. So chances are it's not a warped disk?

My old man said there could be a stone caught between the pads and disk!! until he looked and noticed there was about 2mm of a gap between them!

2mm of gap between disk and pad?????

Thats the frist probelm you need to sort.
  5. #5
    go on?

I thought the didk and pads were always very close together??
  6. #6
    here's them fitted

but they are very close to start and thats the only way they would go on.

oh my bad, i thought you meant the contact face of the pad wasnt touching the disk.

    Ah jesus it's my mistake!!!

Took the car to my dads work, jacked it up, wheel off only to find the alloy in the above state!! The last time I put the wheel on with the spacer, i've not quite lined the holes up to avoid the 2 screws that hold the disk to the hub and it's crushed the screw and put so much strain on the alloy that the 4 holes cracked and one has broken of 2 bits!!

If the counter sunk holes in the disk lined up with the holes on the hub in the first place then this wouldn't have happened!!!! but as it was the other two holes lined up albeit with the heads of the screws sitting out. I thought, with the spacer this will be ok as it would clear the screws but in the end it came back and bite me on the ass!

Alloy is being taken by my old man as he has a steel fabrication company who also fix alloy wheels but he told me not to hold my breath!

Looks like a new set of alloys are required!

Pissed off as I should have been more careful but hey ho.

As you can see in the picture with the disk newly fitted you can see the 2 big counter sunk holes but these would never line up with the 4 holes for the threads!!

    ouch unlucky >_<

unlucky mate good job you did find it tho
  12. #12
yeah, can't imagine how bad it could have been! nasty!!
  13. #13
jeebus, that could have been disasterous
  14. #14
Yeh, unlucky mate, bt those brake setups look lush and work amazingly I hear, a friend has the same setup (GreenSaxo) and they look sexxy!!
  15. #15
Yeah they are very good brakes, apart from the hoses, but work extremely well. Worth it if you can afford them.

Just found out both my front alloys are shagged!! It's been caused by the 20mm spacer I have. The spacer is one of those hollow pieces of shit that offers no support at all, and everytime I tighten the wheel nuts they have nothing to come up flush against as the spacer has in theory another 20mm of fresh air so the nuts begin to pull through the alloy.

This has been the cause and I'm sure as shite the back two will be in a similar state!! Seriously need need alloys now!

We are pleased you found the problem before something serious happened.

its a damn shame about the wheels mind!

ouch glad u found out the problem before it was too late tho#!

    Gareth,

Cheers for the reply, sorry if my email sounded harsh in any way, glad it's not the brakes anyway as the alloys will be cheaper to replace.

Me and my old man are going to be making some 20mm solid aluminum spacers for all 4 wheels so that when I finally get new alloys this kinda thing can't happen again.

We've also countersunk 2 new holes on the disks so everythying is now flush.
