Checking Brakes

  1. #1
My MOT is coming up in about 6 weeks time and i think i might have a problem with one of my rear disks on my VTR!
There seems to be a bit of brake fluid coming from, what looks like the caliper! are these hard to replace by someone who has little knowledge, or is it something better left for the pros?

and how can you tell if you need new disks or pads?

let the handbrake down and count the amout of clicks 4 or so is usually norm, (use this to check rear) you could also let the clutch out slowly so that the car dips and see if its dipping evenly, best way to quick check pads front and rear is to take wheel off and shine torch and see how much is left on the pad, to check the disk run your finger off the end of the disk and see if you can feel a lip, if you can then you need new disks, hope this helps!

From what i have been told you should change you pads if they a less than 1 quarter of an inch or 6mm thick. Drew on this forum let his pads get right down to the metal and it scored the disc and he needed new discs.

(Lol Drew will kill me for saying that)
