looking into new engine as im over the 130k mark!! £195 for just the engine i have been quoted! wot do i need to get it running can i use my old ecu etc etc.... advise please i though that orice was cheap expecting £300 or so, also wot can i expect to go wrong or worth replacing if she is having open heart sergery!???

off the top of my head i can't see any reason why you can't just unplug all the wiring (ecu included) from the old engine, lift it out, then put new engine in and plug the wiring back in, provided the engines are of the same type (iirc yours is/was a 90bhp silvertop?)

can't see why there would be any oil leaks, only things you should make sure you have are the little niggly things like jubilee clips etc little things which could halt progress. other than that should be a case of plug and play

as sean says if its same style engine it will be plug and play if not a bit of works needed

make sure the new engines spot on before putting it in its easier to work on an engine whats out

make sure you have the right tools (hey sean)

Anything cosmetic you want to do should also be done while the engines out, painting rockers, braidong hoses etc

it will b done in wales at Andys garage! "baker & sons" in treherbert so no worries about tools.... he has plenty! im looking to get it done soon if i can... i want it ready for wen his cossie van is up & running itll be 400bhp! so much fun to b had!

If the engine is that cheap to buy i could think of doing the internals also, rods, forgies, skim the head P&P... etc etc.... or even have straight cut costum box made for it!!! Any idea who can custom make straight cut boxes other that quaife!? Andy is using them to rebuild his cosie box i think?

mate shes gonna be all about the "go". not alot to show! best keep it subtle... as john says "wen the flag drops, the bullshit stops" rather she went like stink & just looked well cared for.

the strut brace is painted yellow to match the 206gti calipers, i have made a heat sheild for the mocal oil cooler pipes too and it is also yellow to match, thats enough color coding i think.

Would you not consider going for a VTS lump then and do the work to that?

The KMS engine managment group buy is still in progress on SSC too, might be worth thinking about!

VTS nope, i want 8 valves the insurance is lower & i like to tinker and look after her, if i wanted a fast car id have brought another Honda i like it quick & nippy... not fast & around the 120 mark top end does me fine for now.

just PMd john to see what his thoughts r! wil the KMS work on VTR also it will right as its stand alone Managment!

To quote the KMS people "This management system can be used as an independent injection/ignition system for virtually all types of Otto engine (engines in which the fuel mix is ignited via a spark plug)."

I think you would need to order the full loom version and get a wiring diagram for the VTR to splice them together, or take it somewhere like Carworx and i exect they can do it too. John will be able to tell you much more efficiently than me whats involved

One of the lads in the group buy wants one for his VTR though i think!

it goes crunch & ur gone! lol... quicker change, ill get a short though leaver to comliment also. you can custom the ratios to how you want it ie quck as fcuk through to 4th & a stupidly long 5th for motorway miles... i guess anyway!!

straight cut box is mega £'s and as well as speed of gear changes they are also stronger than helically(sp) cut gears. in my honest opinion i really wouldn't worry about fitting one to a vtr. have a look on the gmc site (i'm sure you have) and phone and speak to john about the choice of gear kits

Surely the loom will be the same so all you would need is the ecu and engine then get the immobiliser code from your old ecu programmed to the new ecu as the immobiliser will be in the original loom then that should be it get these to transfer codes for you they done myn http://www.atpelectronics.co.uk/index.htm

doesn't need a new ecu, if the engine is the same he can use the old one no problem and not need to worry about immobiliser programming etc

as said, all the elecrics will be fine, justpull the old engine out, put the new one in. I'd re use all you old sensors as you know they all work.

straight cut box in a VTR is verging on the mega pointless. Will cost 5k new or from 1.5k second hand, make fuck loads of noise and need rebuilds every ten minutes. Only worth it if you are running mega torque (power is irrelivant to gearboxes)

Unless your lump is fucked, I'd stay with what you have already, maybe upgrade it when the right engine comes along. Provided its still running sweet there's nothing wrong with 130k on the dials

i have been speaking to the mechanics at andys garage who do rallying & they know a place that builds boxes to spec for alot less than 5k! lots of nose - who cares. pointless on a vtr!? i disagree thats like saying its pointless to modify a vtr! with a 285 cam and remap the box will improve thngs further yes!?? just want close ratios and megga economy on motorways. Ive already PM'd Johm for information and advise.

130k on the clock i dont care about, but the thrust bearing has gone in the box and the black diamond clutch will go soon. I know wen the gearbox gives up it usually throws the diff out also, so i want to change it before it happends. The block seems fine, if i change it soon i can rebuild or reuse parts for the other engine if i run it into the ground not alot can be reused. if that makes sense.
