Aftermarket VT* Springs on 1.1

  1. #1
I notice there are a lot of springs that are stated as only fitting a VTR* model. How can this be the case, when there are also others than are universal? If I fit 60mm lowering springs that are stated as fitting only VT*, what will this do to my car?

This will make your car sit higher than it already is. Springs are made to work with the weight of the car, and a 1.1 has a lighter engine than a vtr. When you say universal springs, what do you mean? Custom made ones or ones that will fit various cars in a range e.g. furio, vtr & vts?

there are springs available for 1.1 models dude. but as said its the weight in the front that determines how low ya go on a certain spring

Thanks! It's just my car is booked in for lowering Jan 15, but I've still got to buy parts, but I'm getting frustrated that I can't really find what I'm looking for. I've got 15" alloys on 45 profile tyres, and I've measured between the top of the frnt wheel to the bottom of the arch, and the gap is like 12cm! So 50mm lowering springs just ain't enough! I know there are other factors, like the rear arches, but I can deal with these. I wan't a height that looks good, and I can't help but think that lowering 40mm will still make my car just as high (or higher even) as a standard VT*.

depends how much you lower the rear, my 1.1 is 2 notches on the rear and 50mm at the front, it looks pretty stupid to be honest. . . when i had it 1 notch on the rear it looked pretty smart, but would love to lower the front more but got the same problem as you cant find any lower springs.

if you want some pictures of my car just let me know

50mm is more than enough for lowering on a 1.1 dude

If anyones got any before and after pictures, that would be perfect!

Infact, I'll get a picture now... I need confirmation that it's not unusually high (it's probably not, but it has crossed my mind!)

Alright (sorry to triple post btw ) here are some pictures of my car as it is. It's a bit of a cloudy day so the colouring is a bit off, but the colour is the metallic dark blue (best Saxo colour imho, just ahead of black). Also, please excuse the dirty alloys!

I hope people aren't tired of the lowering subject, but I can't find much information directly related to a base Saxo, and this is a very important decision for me! If anyone could photoshop any of my pics to show the effect of lowering 50mm that would be great! And please, post your before and after pictures!

^^^ this Dave86's which is down 40mm mate - personally I think it looks the titties

^^^ that is liamk15's which is down 60mm

you'll see both still have a defined gap between the front arch and the top of the tyre - but it still looks fine.

just watch the rear when lowering... the inner lip will need grinding to accomodate the new location of the wheel

Yeah I know about the back. Have they both been done with just springs, or new shocks too? Either way they both look good. The garage I bought my car from i selling a GMAX suspension kit for base models, 55mm, springs and shocks, for about £160. Is this a good deal?

i believe both were done with springs only mate.
To be honest having been a passenger in lowered VTS's the one with shocks was a MILES better ride whereas the one purely lowered on springs was such as harsh ride it wasnt really much fun after a few miles.

£160 for a full setup is awesome. Although GMax arent the best to be honest. at the end of the day it's down to what you want to get from the setup...

    i.e. looks, ride, handling etc

Well, I'm on a really tight budget (as you can imagine with just having a 1.1!), so it's really all about compromising. To be honest, I can't really afford the full kit without then worrying about it later. Would quality springs for about £80 give a ride anywhere near the comfort that this budget kit would?

if you're going down 55mm man then you should really go with uprated shocks too. Especially considering the age of your car, you'll probably find your standard shocks will fail rather quickly. which in the long term would mean it would cost you more going with just springs.

I'd say go for the full setup

Go -40mm The VT arches make the car look lower i believe... 40 would be alright all round, especially if you plan on taking people in the back... I had 3 people in the back of mine and the rear was lowered ALOT so if i would have had the car lowered too it would have been rubbing rather bad.

Lesson for those who have 1.1's dont take fat people in the back... unless you dont mind being powerless.
