Which Exhaust System

  1. #1
well decided am going to keep my vtr! and the pipe running into the backbox has rusted away and now blowing, instead of replacing i mayswel fit a performance exhaust...
this has been asked (i am guessing) millions of times....
i want most performance and a raspy sound, don't want it really loud, just suttle and louder when i boot it.... dont really like the deep tone.
got a really tight budget.... so good quality at a good price £250 was sort of my thinking, possibly thats too tight.

    any ideas?

doesn't neccesary need to be a full system, just ideas needed eg de-cat, back box etc.

oh its a mk2 90bhp with the cat under the car. and i if i have money to spare will get a 4 - 2- 1 manifold!

    rep awaits!
  2. #2
mines a powerflow and it sounds sexual!
  3. #3
yeah powerflow, i got one aswell raspy as fook when engine is cold. 240quid usual powerflow system
  4. #4
get on the phone to abp motorsport.
get a single box magnex stainless system, it sounds awesome, it has been designed for abp race cars by magnex. sits nice and high under the car so it never catches, my vtr was down 60mm and it never caurght speed bumps etc.

i have it on my vts now with the de-cat and its mint. has a 3.5" tailpipe and just one box at the rear. was £289.99 when i got it a few years ago.

    carnt recommend it enough lol
  5. #5
get the small oval powerflow back box setup with a straight through centre pipe, maniflod and decatted will make it raspy as fuk with loud crisp pops when u drop gear

Check out www.tuning.co.uk they offer a sportex 4-2-1 Mild Steel manifold £139 with a 2year guarantee (which you won't get from a eBay specail I'll bet) with a bit of Exhaust Heat Wrap you or anyone else with know its now a Stainless Steel jobie.

Also take alook at http://www.rallydesign.co.uk/catalog...1385_1401_1402 these are 'Ashley Style' exhaust systems in Mild Steel, a twin box system (some people will arguee better for back pressure) Phase2 with a 3" tail pipe £114 ! ! !

So well within your budget, as to sound . . . not sure but lets face it for that money thats a bargin and don't think Mild Steel will fall apart after 5mins. Ive had a full Janspeed setup for a year now and apart from being to quiet its fine!

Nice alterative to a custom job :-)
  7. #7
    Whoops almost forgot. . .

Like mentioned above with a Manifold and decat your see the most gains in performance and will also your get the poppin on down changes :-)

The system above allows for the option to keep the cat or replace it with a bypass pipe. remember Mr MoT will want to see the cat back for MoT time so make sure you keep it safe if you remove it :-)
  8. #8
    Janspeed no question.

click me for a video of my car running janspeed exhuast
  9. #9
I didn't know that the ABP system sat higher *gutted* I was looking at one of those but opted for the standard catch on everything Magnex.

  11. #11
are powerflows good enough? thinking about going for one of them....
so whats the centre section? the part from the cat back e.g mid silencer + piping to the back box?
  12. #12
Performance wise Id say there not the best but if you want something different then give them ago although make sure its a decent one as there are more bad ones then good.

what would you suggest performance wise?
  14. #14
I'd suggest searching mate as there's a thousand different views and threads on this subject it'll save you time in the long run.

I have a magnex on mine with raceland 421 I'm happy with this setup.

Basically your exhaust is split up into 4 sections

1: Manifold - This bolts to the head and takes the gases from each cyclinder and puts them together so they can go down your exhaust

2: Cat - This is like a filter for the exhaust taking some of the harmfull elements out of the gases making it more enviromently friendly, since 1994 these have to be on the car for the MoT

3: Center Section - This part links the front part of the exhaust to the rear part, manufactures put a silencer in to bring noise levels down (some put more in)

4: Back Box - this is the last silencer before the gase leaves the exhaust this includes your tailpipe.

All the bits are designed to be changed if damaged and manufactures design the system so its quiet, cheap and replaceable. Performance exhausts are less silenced hence giving better gas follow.

All the parts can be changed on the Saxo for perfomance uprated parts that will do the job better than OE items. 4-2-1 manifolds help the gases move smother and quicker out the head, sports cats have less filter cells to slow the gas flow, decats are just a pipe that replaces the cat and a performace exhaust simply lets the gas out quicker with the added bonus of a unsilenced exhaust note.

The faster you can get the gas out the faster you can get fuel in to burn.

    Simple :-)

Peco have been going for Yonks, they make good direct fit back boxes for a vast range of cars. Admittaly they are more for show and noise than out right performance but if your runnin a base model or simpley want a direct fit back box Peco are fine.

Ive had about 4 Peco's in my time on different cars and have never had any problems.

Id recommend them to anyone whos on a budget, some people lable them directly with chav-mobiles but thats only beacuse they are cheap, large and loud

what are REMUS like? junction26m1 shop on ebay does the full system for £208. or a magnex for £261. there normally 286 for the magnex arnt they? plus i will be getting a de-cat pipe.... just want best performance for my budget....
    need some more opinions....

oh and there is a sportx for £169 Click and these are located not far from me but heard bad reviews about them.....

r-tec do them for £254 delivered including vat.......... thats 96-00
  34. #34
you could go custom and for £250 you can get a cat back system fitted and you can chose the not of the system,

ring longlife on 02920473131 and ask for a price
  35. #35
They seem to be advertising the system at the old price at the moment which will change soon if it hasnt already in their shop. The system that they supply is plus carriage and it comes as a standard Magnex system with the silencer in the centre section, as they cant supply the system that Magnex make for ourselves. Im sorry that i cant match anything on their old price since Magnex have only just had a price change. The Magnex sytem retail price is now £299.99 including VAT.

That sounds like a good buy for someone!

Im just upgrading the manifold on mine and going for the Ashley Race manifold to see how well they perform. We used to deal with these years and years ago and havent heard anything from them for a few years, but they got in touch with us and said that the quality is alot better and and so is the gas flow. I will soon find out hey.

Is everyone else running performance manifolds yet?

I also have a raceland manifold which I have had no problems with this is also forsale

Seriously though I here good things about the GMC manifold although there a more expensive than most.
  39. #39
What sort of power gains can be expected from a manifold? around 8-10 or is it less than this? I assume it differs depending on the make?

How would they catch you? just keep the original heat shield on it spray it black or another discreet colour.

Go you know you want to void your insurance.....
  48. #48
They probs wouldn't catch you, but if they did it would be game over, lol!
