40mm or 50mm? that is the question!

  1. #1
im really stuck and cannot decide how low to drop me vtr. my two choices in my price range are:

-40mm drop on full spax vsx kit (maybe lower the rear 45mm) £179

    or......

-50mm drop on full apex kit £192

ive read alot of threads saying that 40mm is the best for handling but ive also heard that apex is better than spax so i dont know what way to go. will dropping it 50mm (an extra 10mm) really affetc the handling that much?

id like as many opinions as possible please?

    help me!

what do you want it for looks or performance??

a have mine down 60mm and its more for looks at the minute, but i find it to be ok handling wise, only problem is the PAS pipe going down below 50mm so you will have to look out for that just in case it rubs on the tracking/steering arm

id go for the 50mm as i think its a good all rounder

Best handling is considered 30-40mm. Anything more is "too much".

What are you lowering it on? The standard VTR rims? If so, 50mm will "look" better. May be worth getting yourself a set of 15" (VTS) wheels as a 40mm drop with those looks superb.

im on standard vtr rims at the mo but im looking to get 15's in the future. im lowering it on a full kit between the ones above ^^^

So you're going to be getting a set of 15's. Well in that case, I'd look at going down 40mm (for handling) or 50mm (for looks).

If you're only going down 40mm, you don't necessarily need a full suspension kit. You can make do with new front springs.

    go for, its much better

with vts or vtr wheels, with the right size profile, they are both the same size when tyres are on, it may look lower on vtr rims as they are smaller imo

id go down 50mm, looks great, example of -50mm on vtr rims, hessles loverly vtrr.

Got mine lowered yesterday, 40mm on Spax PSX kit. So far very impressed! looks soo much better. Definetely depends if you want it for looks or handling, or if theres any mahoosive speed bumps round your way!

Same boat as me mate, ive plumped for 50 cant wait to get it done.
  10. #10
ive got quite a few speed bumps down my road so that will affetc my decison. does 40mm still look good on standard vtr rims and also can you tell the difference in handling between 40mm and 50mm, one last question is there any rubbing 50mm on vts rims and whats the ride like lol. that is all!
  11. #11
I would go 50mm personally out of the two.
  12. #12
can anyone answer my question just above^^^^
  13. #13
No rubbing on vts rims 50mm down, 40mm looks nice on vtr rims but would look nicer lower imo, I'd imagine there will be a difference in the handling but nothing to worry about.
  14. #14
as far as i know you can go down 60 on vts rims with 40 profile, and theres only slight rubbing on full lock, so 50 will be fine !

im down 60mm at the moment on vts wheels with the 45 profile and have no rubbing
  16. #16
Matt your lucky then mate, im down 60mm and it rubs on full look grrrr....

I guess that all saxos are slighly different heights to begin with and it wil also depend on the amount of weight being carried and also if the adjustemnt was exactly what you thought it was.

    I would say 40mm.
