Can't take out headlight - WHY!!!?

  1. #1
Right, changing my headlihts from standard to smoked, unplugged all the bulbs/sockets and 2 bolts from the top of the light/car body.

But the headlight just doesn't want to come away from the car. It jiggles about but still seems connected. Tried feeling all around it from inside but can't feel/see anything.

thought it may be the far edge of the light where the white plastic slide thing is, but that didn't budge so I hacksawed that off and it's still stuck.

There may be another bolt somewhere but I can't see where it is and room is limited. Do I have to remove the small thin panel underneath the light to get it off and if so, how?

Please help, and pics would be awesome.

There's a bolt underneath the headlight on the mk1's I guess its the same for the 2's?

there is one underneath the headlight... you need to pull out the plastic surround and you can get to it.

you'll need an extender to get to it.

    which plastic surround is that?

The plastic bit under your light, pull it out gently. But be careful they snap easily. Then the bolt is underneath

Just use a 10mil spanner and its eashy peashy. Until you have to put the bastid back in...

the small body panel you mean? that just pulls out?

cool, i'll give it a go

Maybe this will be of some use to you...

    Quote:
    1. Pop open bonnet.

    2. Remove cable that connects to the main headlight bulb.

    3. Remove rubber surround.

    4. Remove the cable that connects to the indicator bulb.

    5. Carefully pop out the front plastic brow which runs along the bottom of the headlight which is fixed to the headlight with a white plastic clip. Try and not snap this clip as it will be used to fixed to the new headlights.

    6. Un-do the three nuts (Two on the top and one underneath behind the bumper).

    7. Carefully wriggle around until the bottom lip of the headlight misses the top of the bumper and then ease the top out.

    8. In each light unit, there's a Valeo (or similar) element which is used to control the height of the bulbs/light by the internal adjuster. To remove this, it's just a case of carefully twisting to the site and pulling out. Be careful not to snap the end off because it's connected to the back of the headlight with a small plastic ball bearing. To have this Valeo element put into a new headlight, take extra care (as before) not to snap off the small ball bearing as this has to slot inside the plastic groove on the back of the new headlight.

It's as simple as that! But remember to make a physical line on a vertical surface (garage door, wall, etc...) to make sure the line of the headlights has not changed. If so, this can be adjusted by the white screw on top of the headlight.

Yes the small strip. Pull near each end gently because if you pull in the middle it will be sure to snap

yeah the clips snap easy mate but i used a door clip (you have to trim the clip for it to fit in the holder) to put mine back on, use a wobble bar to get to the bottom bolt under the headlight

Not to mention that the headlight and bumper are a tight fit so you will need to move the bumper a bit out of the way but you can do that easy it's not much. At least with mines.

what would happen if you didnt put the bottom bolt back in??

would they still stay in place, as the other 2 bolts would still hold it in?
  13. #13
since it's a pretty snug it would be "okay" but on bumps etc it will vibrate around and stuff which with headlights I guess is not the best thing to have but yeah shound't be anything major.

To be honest if you didn't fit the bottom bolt i don't think it would be the end of the world, they are a very tight fit and with the other two bolts in place i don't think they would move anywhere...
As there are two posts that slot into the metal to stop them moving side to side.

Don't worry if you snap the clips that hold the plastic bit underneath your headlight... mine were manky and basically crumbled when i applied any force so i bought a complete new set... they are only 14p each from citroen!

    Hope that helps
