skimming vts head. how much?

as above. im gonna get my head skimmed along with the port & polish but with the catcam 708's im not sure how much i can get skimmed off without going too far and the valves touching the pistons?

please help!

i just rang catcams themselves and asked them. they said to only have about 4 or 5 though taken off. is it really worth it? thats not even a tench of a milimeter is it?

0.127mm = 0.005 (5 Thou *sp)

you can take up to .5mm with the 708s. you have 1.5mm clearance and standard height and Matt (QEP) told me that i needed at least 1mm clearance. i got 0.3mm took off mine so it leaves me with 1.2mm clearance.

there is no point in getting the head skimmed if your gonna drop the compretion by puttin a thicker gasket in!

oh yer and williams. how did you say you got your catcams to idle properly?

when at tdc how much do i advance each cam, inlet & exhaust to get in to idle sweet until my remap?

like how many degrees? i can remember you told me but i cant find the thread mate.

0.005" is fook all, probs enough to take any unevenness off the head. 0.040" is 1mm.

get it pressure tested when you get it skimmed, this checks for any cracks etc. i had that done with my escort head years ago, guy around here skims the head and pressure tests it for a good price.

you dont want a mirror finish either, just a slight finish to help seal on the gasket

anyone worth their salt who does this for a job will do a good job for you. and should be able to tell you how much to take off.

spencer - not sure how much in degrees. but if you lock your crank and cam pullies at tdc.
keep the crank locked.
then move the cams by 1.5mm from the locking holes this way:
inlet - retard
exhaust - advance

so its retard inlet 1.5mm and advance exhaust 1.5mm and there will be no risk of the valves touching the pistons after the head has been skimmed?

i mean with me advancing and retarding timings.

no i ahve had my head skimmed with 708s. just crank it over by hand before starting it to make sure all is ok.

got the head off and wont to send it off to be port and polished. and someone has allready had a go! made a right fukin mess thouygh. looks like they have done it with a chissel! i took it to a head tuner and he said it's about wrecked my head! he also said that luckily its not gone past optimum port size. i told him what cams i was putting in and the lift and he gave me an optimum port size.

so im gonna port it myself with a compressor and some flap wheels. started it this morning so ill take some pics. at college at the mo. so long as i keep the ports even and get them around the optimum size he said ill be safe. i also asked him how much he would charge and he said £450!!! fuk that!
