Port and Polishing

What exactly does this do? and skimming the head?

as usual i have no idea about engines, but wanting to do my s properly by just doing engine mods, exhaust and manifold next then cams, but what are the little things i can do inbetween to help it run better and maybe help push out more power or run better.

So basically what does the above involve? what other bits can i do to the car?

any help would be grateful and rep wil be left for those i can leave rep for

All casting marks in the air ports are removed to help increase airflow speed. The head is ported, polished, and glassbeaded to smooth out all minor flaws.

basically the better the air intake the better i think

Portin is when you carefully grind away this un-necessary material smoothing the flow paths for the intake and exhaust gasses.

Polishing is. . . well just that. Polishing the surfaces of your combustion chambers and exhaust ports reduces the drag coefficient of those surfaces making it even easier to ingest and expel gasses.

Copy and paste? Or have i misjudged you all this time??!!

Anyone know a rough price? i know places will charge different, any one know places in the noth east?

port and polish is just matching the ports of the inlet and exhaust ports with the gaskets, if you offer up the gaskets to the head, you will see that the gaskets are larger than the head ports.
you just taper/open out the ports at the start of the inlet side and exit of the exhaust side. thats porting.

    polishing.

you remove and casting snots etc that are inside the ports, the head is made of 2 parts cast together so you will always get these marks and the factory dont bother removing them. you just remove these and then polish the ports to make the gasses flow over them better/faster.

you can do it yourself, just done one yesterday, looks pritty good
skimming the head gives you a slight increase in compression (depends how much you take off) as you are making the gap between the head and piston smaller so the compression is increased. good for N/A cars bad for turbo cars, hence the reason you use a plate between the head and block for a turbo, this make the gap bigger so the compression is lower or you can use forged pistons lol

    hope that makes sense?

dosnt really make a massive difference in performance but helps a tad when you have cams etc.
got all the gear at home to do it myself. proper way to do it is to measure the amount the first port holds in liquid, then syringe the liquid out and record amount the port holds, do the rest of the ports to match. then you know they are all equal.

used to do this at my old place for peeps, done a mates. put it in a £750k deburring machine to remove all the crap from the casting after i had enlarged the ports, it came out like a mirror. the machine holds the head in a clamp and vibrates so fast it looks like its not moving lol
then the machine fires lube down the ports with ball bearings in it. it came out like a mirror, no blemishes at all. the lube and ballbearings follow the port the same path as the gass does so its all good.
that was a 16v vauxhall head for my mates dads race car.

pitty i dont work there anymore

  11. #11
unless you get a spare head and leave it with me, i will do it for you no probs mate.
  12. #12
talk bout it closer to easter, going away on sunday and wont be back till easter, maybe a few weekends here, but if you do your spare one, then do the one from your vts id have that for my head and some cash of course

may even have exhaust and manifold fitted then

I've never looked into it really, whats used to port it then?

usually small flap wheets and various other tools. its not just a case of matching ports to gaskets. there is an optimum port size for different profiles of cams and car engine sizes. you do actually make the ports bigger. bore them out if you like. but they all need to be the same size. the guy who did mine did a corse redtop engine and did some one off cams for it. it made 274bhp at the fly n/a too! and all the ports on that were within a thou of each other!

if port and polishing is not done correctly u can lose bhp, when u send it to a company to do it they check tho airflow through each port, then inlarge all ports and match the new flow rates of each ports so the air flow in each is matched as if there not one may flow quicker then others making one run different etc... also you cant just start taking any metal off anywhere in the port as the ports also make the air swirl as it enters the combustion chaimber thus making the air mix with the fuel better which gives a better bang. they also check the valves to see if there sealing correctly, its all known as gas-flowed. so like i say u can do more damage then good if you dont know what your doing as its not just like polishing and porting a simple stright peice throttle body like some people do on here

Is there anyone near manchester or North West that does a good job at this?
  20. #20
sure there must be somewhere mate but personally i would only get it done if ur camming and remaping your car as if ur doing it on a fairly standard vts u wont realy notice any difference tbh
  21. #21
just about to get cams fitted to mine and was wondering this as well anyone know a good place to do this near doncaster north east???
  22. #22
the bloke that did mine is about an hour away from you mate. his number is either 01530274433 or 07784000517.

he is proper awesome. would recommend him top anyone. his business is called RC PERFORMANCE. give him a ring and find out a bit. hes in leicestershire

How much did it cost you mate?

Headwork will loose you power unless its done well. Matt Saville at QEP has a good rep on the 8 valve lumps and seems to know his onions from chatting to him. I'd avoid anyone you're not sure of. A mate of mine lost about 20bhp on his 306 rallye and it started to run at 15mpg, almost totally down to shit headwork.
