i do all work on my car. they aren't complicated cars to work on you just need to get stuck in. think its either a 32 or 27 mm socket for driveshaft nut. get someone to hold the brake pedal down and use a breaker bar.

I do all the work on my cars engine, but recently williamsvts helped me put my VTS engine in and he has taught me alot to do with them. So I think I can tinker alot more now!

im just wondering how far some people go, as mine needs a service soon so im trying to do the easy stuff so i can keep the garage bill down

to be honest its not rocket science working on cars, the mechancal side is easy to understand so changing brakes, services and replacing parts anyone with common sense should be able to tackle, its things like the electronics on new cars that require special diagnostic tools that the diy cant realy do, the new mercs require a diagnostic laptop just to change a set of brake pads as you have to tell the ecu u fitted them or loads of warning lights come up. i also do all my own work on my cars, from servicing to full engine rebuilds, mind you i am a qualified mechanic, heres my qualifications:

    * Mercedes Benz Qualified Maintenance Technician

    * Edexcel Level 3 BTEC national double grade merit certification in vehicle repair and technology

the key is doing the job with the correct tools, stick to that and u cant go far wrong
  12. #12
yeah having the right tools is half the battle, buy a good stuff such as snapon and u will never have to buy a set again, i spent over £5,000 on tools now
  13. #13
wow thats one hell of some qualifications, i think for now i shall tackle the basics i may try doing the brakes will have to get my mitts on a haynes manuel, jools are now problem ill just use the ones at work
  14. #14
what u doing? fronts or rears? discs and pads? pm me and i'll talk u through how to do it
  15. #15
i just aint going to pay someone to do something that i could do myself, think of it like that. if you are mechaniclly minded you will be able to work out how things come apart and go back together as you go. just give yourself plenty of time when doing thigs for the first time.
  16. #16
I do most of the stuff on my car myself unless im not to confident in myself about it or it needs specialist tools.
  17. #17
yep, i do all of the work myself. only thing i didnt do on my last car was lower it.

i serviced it, fitted bigger discs and grooved rears with pads. also did the air filter, strut brace, gearbox and clutch, fitted buckets and frames. and also fitted the supercharger kit.

think i will get some help from williams to sort the vts motor out. will be able to fit it, but will be lost with the electrics etc lol
haynes manual is a gods send. get yourself a good set of tools and a quality jack and axle stands
  18. #18
done everything on mine apart from lower as i didnt have the space todo it and was in winter or i would of done it outside
  19. #19
I got a mate who works for shitroen, i service it, he watches over and stamps the book. lol
