kind of how to guide for shortening shifter

  1. #1
decided to throw this up as i did mine tonight..

to remove gearknob i put the car into 4th gear as i was advised by other members and pulled up like crazy.. takes a while but it does come off.. i was then left with the bare shifter rod with a white plastic coller over the top part of the rod, as much as i tried i could not get this to slide off so i decided to cut what height i wanted off the rod.. after this was done i then was still left with part of the plastic coller, to remove this i sawed down into the plastic coller all the way to the bottom where its rounded and sawed into it, eventully i got all the way through allowing the plastic coller to peel open and be removed.. i then had my shortened shifter!! all i needed to do after that was put the gearknob and gaiter back on and hoover up!! on and when using a hacksaw.. do be careful as i found out after sawing into my hand! lol

is it any better that low down or is it a bit annoying ive thought about doing it for a long time now just never got round to it

i havent took it a drive yet just moved it through the gears and it felt ok, had it done on my old vtr and it felt soooo much better. i think part of the sloppy gearbox feeling saxos have is due to how long the shifter rod is tbh.. feels alot tighter now..

might give it a go then, my car best hope i can get to sleep else its gonna get it!

    DIY Hero :-)

Good luck to ya, if it works for you. Personally Id rather pay and get a quick shift wether it be in B&M fashion ie a complete replacment shifter or just the lower section which other companies can supply.

Ive had B&M's in a few of my cars and highly recommend them but they are abit expensive :-)

I agree with predator, been looking at quick shifts recently and I've never come accross one that looks anything like that one on ebay.

i cut mine down, not so far, just kept cutting off till i felt comfortable with the height

it looks well short in the pic, be quite hard to shift gear, i think saxo gearknob is about and inch too high, i wouldnt cut it down that much in my opinion

    Wot??? Im confused....
How does cutting it down shorten the shift throw?
Or are we are talking about somehting else here.....

the shorter it is, the less distance your hand/arm has to travel.

to make it easier to understand, imagine if it was 1 metre long. think how far you would have to move it then.

while it reduces the distance you need to move your hand to change gear, i'm unsure as to whether it does exactly the same thing as a short shifter.
does a short shifter change the linkages or something??

it doesnt shorten the throw as the pivot point and linkages below it remain exactly the same. You have only given yourself an impression that its shorter but its not at all.

mines not hard to get into gear at all... feels a hell of a lot better now with it done

  26. #26
i think im going to give that one a miss and just get a proper B&M Quickshift

    good idea though

it just makes the stick shorter mate, not the actual gear shifts.

i thought so mite just fork out for proper quickshift kit
  31. #31
it makes your hand not travel as far........ not the time between going form 1st to 2nd etc but i imagine it would by something stupid like a 100th of a second

    feels better also

done it on my xr2 years ago
