French Number Plates

  1. #1
Now in my mind (what a crazy place that is) I think there is nothing that ranks up the kudos like German Plates on a German car, Golfs, Polos and BMW's.

While me and the missis where at Trax last year there was a Yellow 106 GTi with French Plates and I thought thats just pure SAX

So the hunt began to find French number plates, finally found somewhere that held the 'F' euro badge and ordered them this morning. The bloke just phoned and said 'You dont want them . . . You WANT these . . . Proper Metal Stamped French Frogie style plates' Oh yes check these out . . .

    http://www.craigsplates.com/French-N...FUNJMAodBCLw1Q

Don't forget to space your numbers out as France has 3 3 3 rather than the 2banks of letters and number ie

    mine is

V431 PKM in France it would be V4 31P KM

Viva La France Whos gona get some too . . .

Its ok if or wen I get pulled over . . . "Viva La France . . . Wee Wee . . . No Speaka English . ." Round where my parents live if you say 'No Speaka da English' you get free house, money, mobile phone and don't have to ever work again plus free health care, but thats another story and doesnt really belong on here.

is it legal to space the letters out like this? i was considering a set but wasnt sure if it was legal or not to do it!
  10. #10
Nice website, good selection of badges and other images if its what your looking for.
  11. #11
Yes... Dubmeister do them. On their site, you can only view the plates with the "D" badge but I emailed them and they did say that as long as you tell them you want the "F" badge, then that's fine. I'll be getting myself a set very soon

coulda got you a set mate, we have that style reg here i.e european style, with the eu logo, we have irl instead of f, but my local motor factors do the metal plate and F logo if you wanted Purely for show reasons though i might add
  13. #13
Yep thats all I plan to do is 'show' it off :-)

All joking aside these days their soo strick with number plates its silly yet you still see Posh motors with illegaly spaced number plates yet they get away with it.

Just a quick question... when you say "in France it would be...", don't French cars/plates have the two numbers at the end so your plate wouldn't be "as per the French". Or... were you only talking about the spacing?

I'll be getting some (as said before) that will be on my car for road use. They'll be my normal plates (spacing, etc...) but with the French format and F logo up on the left.

In France they have a Different amount of numbers plus the layout is different, see below . . .

This is a French Plate . . . Numbers -space- Letters -space- Numbers

This is a pic of the car I saw at trax . . .

If you space the letters on this 'rather nice' little 106 you will find its a UK plate made to look like a French plate. A UK plate doesnt have enough digits to make a proper French plate but a French 'Style' plate is the best I can do
  18. #18
Ahhh I see. So your plate will be of a similar layout but not format (i.e. letters at the end as opposed to numbers). Cool

    Ash... Yes, pressed metal
  19. #19
Cant wait to get em :-)
  20. #20
This is what I'll be getting...

But with F on the left hand side as opposed to D.

No.. because your car is not French registered. They do look temptingly good though...
  25. #25
Hmmm i am debating whether to get a set..I really like them.
  26. #26
I'm sure you could argue the fact that your French car WAS registered in France

My mate has a set and hasn't had any trouble "yet".
  27. #27
They will be illegal anyway because they are not reflective!! Sorry to be such a kiljoy I do like them loads though!
  28. #28
So... all foreign cars should be fined then!?!
  29. #29
The Fuzz are more likley to pay less attention to the car if they think its forgion, Ive see so Rite Royal French, Spainish, German cars on my travels and Police just drive past.

Where my parents live in East London Polish, LT, CZ, and other Eastern Block countries cars look hardly roadworthy yet not a thing is done due to the Fuzz Know its not worth the time.

I reckon if you drove past a Police car with French plates he wouldnt even bother pullin you over - Unless you was drive round a roundabout on three wheels then he mite consider it :-)

    Update...

    Quote:
VEHICLES REGISTERED AND NEW REGISTRATION PLATES FITTED ON OR AFTER 1ST SEPTEMBER 2001 (MANDATORY SPECIFICATION)

    1. The plate must be made of retroreflecting material which, as regards its construction, colour and other qualities, complies with the requirements of -

    (a) the British Standard specification for retroreflecting number plates published on 15 January 1998 under number BS AU 145d[13], or

    (b) any other relevant standard or specification recognised for use in an EEA State and which, when in use, offers a performance equivalent to that offered by a plate complying with the British Standard specification, and which, in either case, is marked with the number (or such other information as is necessary to permit identification) of that standard or specification.

    2. Where the registration mark is displayed on the front of the vehicle, it must have black characters on a white background.

    3. Where the registration mark is displayed on the back of the vehicle, it must have black characters on a yellow background.
    And...

Quote from email received direct today from DVLA Swansea.

"I can confirm that your assumption is mostly correct and European number plates may be used legally on vehicles manufactured between these dates (1973 and 2001). Schedule 2 Part 1 also extends the 'European' facility to number plates fitted on vehicles manufactured after September 2001. However, the equivalence test would be carried out against the latest issued British Standard"

Our plates are German DIN standard marked...so should be UK legal in themselves...We have more work to do, but will be doing this with some urgency.
So... the plates can be used as legal road plates
