vts Gearbox change

  1. #1
I've finally joined the fooked gearbox club!

i have access to a ramp and am thinkin of changing it myself as i'm in an experimental stage and wanna learn more about the ins and outs of my vts.

do you guys think this is a job for the garage or do-able by a semi-novice. bearing in mind i work on jet engines so have access to any tools that may be needed.

    thanks

    kev

Is that easy enough to do?

are they easy to come by?

if your rebuilding its fairly simple, just need to remove the gear set off of one pinion shaft etc.. ive not done it.

you can come across them. s1 rallyes good luck finding one.

    1.4xsis are about.

i have a spare for sale

mate vts box is good enough for acceleration

its not difficult to do the gearbox, done mine and the clutch
  7. #7
    ive done 3 of them
quite easy to do, only need a basic toolkit, some allen key sockets and a 30mm socket to get the driveshafts out from what i remember.

    hope this helps.......

s1 rallye and xsi are alot better though, due to the final drive

    depends on your rev limit.

i think im going to be restriced to 128 on my s1 box with 7800 rpm.

but remember how often do you drive over a ton

ill just get there alot faster

got a vtr box in mine lose a bit of acceleration but tops out at 145mph still keeps up with standard vts's aswell with ease i might add

wont keep up with what im gonna be running

o dont see why you would want longer ratios when you cant actually use them on the public highways, and to this date ive not heard of a track other than brunters where a speed like 145 in a saxo would be doable.

so why would you want shorter ratio's as you cant actually use them on the public highway try accelerating flat out up to the speed limit when a cop is near, trust me they will ave you

they'll nob you for speeding but they cant do shite if you're just accelerating up to the speedlimit (might do you driving recklessly)

    read what i put??

    track
somewhere where point to point acceleration is improatant and drive out of the corner.

a friend has a vtr box on a 183bhp engine. so i know that the box is wayyyyyyyyyy to long

there is no law on how quickly you reach the speed limit. i am putting an xsi CW + CWP into a spare vts box to go on mine. i would rather have shorter ratios then longer.

thats right there isnt a law but its classed as reckless driving as i found out 6yrs ago

    anyway.....

    back to the gearbox subject!

there is a guy on the 106 rallye register that wants to sell me an S2 box with 73k on it for 130quid. he says he changed it for an S1 box and it worked fine when he took it off.

is this worth buyin or should i wait for an S1 box?
  21. #21
Easy enough mate,PM me or someone if you get badly suck..
Done it once on a VTS, and done 2 on a vtr, doing my 3rd at the moment!
Have fun with the offside driveshaft! (Unbolt the bracket and take it all off or sometimes u can slide the driveshaft out when you leave the driveshaft inthere...but can be hard to get out beciase of the bearing in there... Personally id take the driveshaft and bracket off (otherwise it can eb aright pig..), slide the bracket off the driveshaft and bolt that back up first when putting in all back together, then slide the driveshaft through it into the box... You will understand when you come round to doing it, and if you are doing the clutch too make sure it is lined up properly, otherwise you wont get the gearbox input shaft in...! But its not too hard, just do it carefully!
  22. #22
kev once you have got your box give me a bell mate an we will get the ramps out in my garage and change the box there a simple job couple of hours last time i did one....

yes as the gearset is the same.

but no point in paying the extra for an s2 box if you can get hold of a cheap vts box as they have the same sports gearset

so if i just send my box away to get reconditioned then fit an S1 final drive myself - thats prob the best/cheapest way to do it?

if getting it reconned you need the final drive at the same time
as fitting the final drive means gearset off jobby as its at the back of the box. so no point getting a recon only to take it appart again.
