Doesn't idle

I hope this is in the right topic - i was toying between this and problems & queries!

    Help !!

It's my girlfriends 1.1, 1998. Whenever you try and start it, the engine just cranks over but when you give it some revs it starts up, but only stays running if you keep giving it revs. When you then take your foot of the accelerator it just cuts out - could it be something to do with the idling problems mentioned in the sticky? Worth a try?

Also, when it's running the exhaust is blowing badly, could this be the problem.

And I looked at the spark plugs after and they are black so i presume too much fuel not enough air - sould could there be an air leak sumwhere in the inlet manifold?

I have searched and only found the sticky that could be relevant, but just wanted opinions on what you think it could be and what's worth trying.

    Any help is appreciated, thanks

    same here

    worse in the cold

been ok recently as im used to reving it everywhere, once it warms up its all cool

So do you reckon it's worth fixing the blowing exhaust and then jst hold the revs letting the engine warm up? And see how it is then?

i have this problem too............... aaaarrrrrrggggghhhhhhhhhh

    Anyone with any ideas?

mine did it for a while, was when the battery wasnt charging. altenator ?
could be not enough back pressure if the zorst is badly blowing too.
might want to change the plugs though, the fact theyre black wont be helping anything.

Ok, thanks. I think i'll try and sort out the blowing on the exhaust and put some good spark plugs in and see of that solves it.

it might be injector clogging, but I don't know anybody who has ever experienced this so can't say for sure. I'd go with wear-out items, and both the pressure regulator and the fuel pump could be tired out. how many miles has the car done??

    It's done just over 60k

It might be the alternator...my ex's car did this and whenever he stopped he had to keep the revs up...he got a new alternator and its fine now!

Kool, looks like i'll have to get the multimeter out maybe . Thanks

i got vts engine on 1.4 fuel pump... could this be the problem.... look like a right twat at junctions..

I don't know, as it seems to be overfueling as the spark plugs are black - there's not enough air getting in for some reason or another i think

this is exactly same as mine. was thinking of turnin the idle up abit... maybe to 1000rpm instead of the 700rpm at mo
  15. #15
Yeh suppose that is an option - how do you turn the idle up a bit? Would it be in the haynes?
  16. #16
mine cuts out if i brake harshly, so you have to drive generally slower - probably makes me a better driver
  17. #17
lol, my westcoast has done that in the past, i think it was to do with where i had my open filter - I had it so that the open filter sat between the battery and the nearside light. I've changed it now and it hasn't done it since *touch wood*

its a litle screw thing doesnt do anything really... i think my idle controll valve might need claen/replacin... idles good for bit then cuts out...

just sprayed injector cleaner in air filter thing...... smoked like fuck when revin it...then went normal.. so geuss it cleaned somethin. but still cuttin out wer is the stepper moter thing i might try clean that if that possible

I fixed it today. I sorted out the blowing in the exhaust and it idle's okay now, thanks for all your help

Clean out the throttle body, an idler valve may want a clean. Check sensors ont he throttle body and the plugs which go into them, check the wires are all good too..
