Use the Haynes manual to help you, if you aint got it. What you need to do is take out the indicators, you can do this by putting a flat head screwdriver down a hole behind them you push down on a bit of plastic which releases the indicator, then you have to pull it out whilst holding the screwdriver in place, bit fiddley. when the indicator is out there will be a plastic clip holding the grill to the car, flip this off, using a screwdriver again, then its just a case of unscrewing the bolts on the top of the grill, there's 3 i think, once you have these out you should be able to manouver it out. I used to have a mk 1 but it was a while ago so i'm doing it from memory, if you have any probs let us know, hope that is of some help.
