backfiring

   What actually makes a car backfire. and is it possible to make it happen deliberately? I have a cherry bomb box fitted to my 1.0, and a k.n filter, will i i everg et it backfiring?

   if you are talking about where u get a mini flame ball come out the back end it is possible to make it happen deliberately by installing a kit.

   yes you choose when to activate the flamer kits, though they dont work well on normally aspirated cars.

   normally aspirated meaning the engine breathes itself, there is nothing forcing air into the cyclinders by means of a turbo or super charger

   When you say "back fire" do you mean when you lift off the throttle and allow the car to roll allong, slowing it's self gently, known as "over run", and get poping throught the exhaust?
   
   If so, this is caused by un-burnt fuel ignighting in the exhaust, usualy a result of a slightly rich mixture.
   
   when an engine is in this "over run" condition it is possible to run verry lean withought causing damage to the engine, wich is why "citroen" will have set a protocall in the ecu to tell it to shut off the injection, whilst in this state, untill the rpm reaches say 2000rpm then the injection will revert back to fueling, as per it's map, to stop the car stalling.
   
   It's a trick they use to boost the fuel econimy of a car.
   
   If, on the other hand, you're on about these "flamer kits", then, as Simon rightly says, they ain't so special on cars like yours, however, I have seen these kits using something like propane gas to give the flame, not sure who sells them or how much they are, but they are out there if you look hard enough.
