Just had car lowered - rear knocking noise?

  1. #1
Just had car dropped 35mm all round, looks great but there's a slight knocking noise coming from the rear which speeds up to the speed of the car, can't hear the noise over 15mph. Is it a pipe touching or something?

just been under the car, filthy, theres a brake pipe or something touching the wheel!

I did. it isn't that, it was a break pipe or handbrake not sure which, gf has just stringed it to the suspension for an inch of clearance, the pipe has bowed towards the wheel as its been lowered.

will I need to get a mechanic to modify the pipe or will a tie wrap sort it? the pipe is pressing hard against the alloy/tyre? dont think the string will hold

just call past mate and he will sort it for you or cable tie should do

hand brake cable, always happens when they have been moved out of their clips, cable tie will fix it

I may nip down after I get the new alloys as they will be wider and rub even more!! no point tie wrapping it up just to remove it a day later!!!

Don't know what I'd do without the gf, she just dived under and tied it back with string, she also fitted the lights, panel filter and popped the dent out!!! she gets into all the nuts and crannies most lads can't!!

Is there an handbrake cable at the other wheel at the driver side? seems to be a similar cable but with inches of room.
  13. #13
yes same on both sides, drivers side may still be in its clipping cable tie it to just incase
  14. #14
I will! well gf will! Is it common for the cables to pop out of the clips when car is lowered?
  15. #15
yes because usually they will be unclipped from the arm when doing the lowering, would be pretty much the same case if the cables had to be replaced etc...
  16. #16
Is it the ride height that makes them pop out/hard to pop back in or mechanics forgetting to pop them back in? I've never read about this problem before regarding lowered saxo's!
  17. #17
popped the clip back in now I had a minute, was embarrassingly easy! don't think it will pop out, mechanics probably forgot to put it back in.

I do have a ping noise coming from the back when going slow now though, usually whilst going round a tight corner. Sounds like a spoon tapping a milk bottle. Is it the aforementioned problem?

Cable tie the handbrake cables anyway.

Cheers scott, no way of tightening it up without taking the alloys off?

what driving scenarios usually cause the ping noise to happen? is my case typical? don't think its made the noise yet over 20mph?

It usually happens when I'm slowly pulling the car in and out of the garage turning slightly. Sounds very similar to the exhaust cooling down but louder.

anything that causes either of the rear arms to raise or fall would cause the noise, can be huge movements or even the tiniest thing. Quite legendary problem that from a few years ago when it was driving a few of us completely insane before i found the solution one day. Lol those were the days.

You can tightend the nut with the wheel still on, depending on the wheel, i have always had airy 5 spokes so plenty of room the get an extension bar through.

I would be tempted thought to jack it up and just replace the bolt with another M8 one, grease and tighten

cheers, I'll let you know how I go on, may be another cramped job for the gf's tiny hands. I have the standard pepperpots on.
